Yes! I've just moved house and was waiting for the final bill for the last month we were in the flat. Came to over £100 for just under one month. We'd paid £60 for the whole quarter for this time of year last year. It's only a one bed flat and I'm really tight frugal with gas and electricity. I was outraged !

sliceoflife · 02/03/2009 13:15

Gas £530 for the last quarter. 4 bed edwardian semi with fairly high ceilings. Double glazing but no cavity wall insulation as we have solid walls. Loft insulated as well as we can. Heating on 1.5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening (then we retreat to the living room and light the fire). Sometimes if I am at home in the day I will put it on for a couple of hours, but try not to.

yellowflowers · 02/03/2009 14:40

my gas one just came - £250. Complete shock. 3 bed terrace.

wolfear · 02/03/2009 16:34

I was horrified at the bill that came last week - £535 for gas - this is on the capped 'discount' rate. Although, for the last six months or so (stupidly) I've has estimated readings and called in with my reading a couple of weeks ago. Never again will I accept estimated reading. I live in a 3 bed semi in Nottingham and am not excessive at all. It's disgusting.

Longtalljosie · 02/03/2009 22:00

Yes me too - £500-odd for gas, £220-odd for electricity. One bill was an exact reading, the other a slight underestimation. We have a 1930s 4 bed with an extension so some of the walls have cavity insulation but some don't.

I don't know whether to be depressed or relieved by all these messages! I thought there must be something wrong with the heating and was wondering what to do. Now I can see it's just the way it is...

BaDaBing · 02/03/2009 22:09

We have a 2 bed end terrace, live in Scotland and have heating on a Lot! Pay £86.50 per month for combined gas and electric and just got a bill following a meter reading sayin we are £40 in credit

You can all hate me now......lol

PurlyQueen · 03/03/2009 01:40

I nearly keeled over when I saw my gas bill today - £300 for the quarter - that's over a third more than last year.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 03/03/2009 02:06

Have 2 bed flat in newly built block of 4. we are the upper floor so get some heat from flat underneath. Loft is quite well insulated i think.

we pay around 70 per month for combined gas and elec. Heating on for an hour in the morning and about 2 hours at night dep on weather. We are in the north of scotland and it can get pretty chilly! But we do the jumpers and blankies thing too. Elec hob and oven. No tumble drier or dishwasher here, (kitchen is a shoebox). We don't use 70 quids worth in the summer so let it build up to cover extra in winter. Usually remember to phone with reading in time before bills come out, it helps to keep things in check.

Mitcheyinge, i would seriously think about asking your supplier to check your meter and supply, it sounds mad. Not to scare you, but a friend of mine found out after about 2 years that they had meters numbers mixed up and she was actually paying the bill of someone next door as well as her own!!! It took about 3 years of letters and persistence and threats to go to WatchDog but she eventually got a large refund. And used it for a brilliant holiday. Every time she had a cocktail she toasted British Gas!

naughtymummy · 03/03/2009 09:56

Mitchy I feel for you thats awful. We too had a £200 gas bill for 9th Dec to 12th Jan (switching suppliers). But we have a big 4 bed house with big windows and had it on constantly for 2 weeks over xmas. We are being a lot more stingy now. Comforting to know we are not alone.

wotulookinat · 03/03/2009 10:06

Yup - £400 electric and £700 gas. 3 bed house. Not amused. We were paying £50 a month, and that was what we still owed after a year. Outrageous.

wiggletastic · 03/03/2009 12:39

We have just had our direct debit put up to £89 a month for gas and electric combined from £59. We live in a 3 bed modern detached house and have gas heating which is on for about 7 hours a day, gas cooker and a tumble drier. Really hoping for a good summer this year as last year we had the heating on most of the summer too and used the drier a lot as no chance of hanging anything out to dry in the constant pouring rain!!

lemurtamer · 04/03/2009 12:23

I decided to see if my energy provider was the cheapest available, and according to a website checker it wasn't, so I arrange to switch. As expected I had a call from my current provider offering me discounts to stay, which sounded good. I explained that as I was at work I could not make a decision, as I would need to do calculations at home, which caller said he could not do. Eventually he said he would end the call as I was wasting his time! I was polite, and fairly interested, so I am very proud to have the phone put down on me by a cold caller

zazas · 04/03/2009 13:19

We are also shocked at the rise in prices! We use oil as our source of heating and between that and electricity our bills are up to £340 a month - ouch! That is not even being in the house during the week days...

Does anyone know their annual electricity usage? I have just worked it out that we have used approx 10,000 units in 12 months - it seems high - is it??

nopaddle · 04/03/2009 14:03

we seem to use just under 2000 units each quarter so must come in around 8,000 for the year. I work from home so computer on all the time, 2 tvs on most nights, but no tumble dryer and the heating is gas. HTH

We get gas and elec from Atlantic and I think they are v reasonable on costs .. certainly compared to what some people are paying

Iklboo · 04/03/2009 14:08

We did - checked it and it was estimated despite meter reader being round. When we looked at the meter ourselves they's overcharged us by over £100.
They also wanted us to double our direct debit for the gas despite us being in credit for every single bill. We politely told them to forget that idea.

Bellebelle · 18/03/2009 11:46

Sorry to resurrect this thread but remembered seeing it and have to vent! With npower after switching through uswitch, live in 2 bed flat, we were paying £80 a month dd and they want to put it up to £199 a month as of next week. As my DH's granny would say "aye right, that'll be shining!" i'm on maternity leave until June so we'll be cancelling the direct debit and paying them what we can afford until then. As soon as it's paid off we'll be switching as I notice npower are hardly bringing their prices down. Aghhhh...I am truly grateful for all I have but seems to be one thing after another just now!

coreyregan · 03/07/2009 10:40

i live in northern ireland we only have one power provider here NIE,my monthly direct debit s £92my cooker runs on gas(tank)i do have a tumble dryer but only use it in emergencys!!i switch everything off when not in use,the only thng can think of thats running up the bill would be my 16 yr old sons xbox 360,does anyone know if these consoles use up a lot of electricity?its on most of the day!

zeke · 03/07/2009 10:45

We used to pay £115/mth combined and then swapped supplier and they said they could do it for £95/mth. So we paid that for six months.

Then we get a bill through saying we are £1200 'in debt' and we need to up our monthly payment to £420/mth. OMG. DH rang and complained. That was assuming winter usage so we have actually started paying £270/mth. Quite a hike up still! We live in a 5 bed house but the reception space is pretty small even though we have 5 double bedrooms, it is also well insulated etc and not an old property.

zeke · 03/07/2009 10:46

it was npower that did this to us Bellbelle!
