I've just had to correct the spelling on ds' homework - his teacher's.

I thought it looked wrong so checked in the dictionary (yeah ok, it's been a while since I needed to spell it) and no, isosceles is not spelt isoceles.

I wrote it correctly for ds' benefit and wrote sp! in the margin for her's!

Am I setting ds up for purgatory?

WilyFox · 11/02/2009 20:00

What was the word?

Hulababy · 11/02/2009 20:00

I am not sure I'd have gone as far as to put sp in the margin!

SalmonintheLiffey · 11/02/2009 20:05

Ì didn't have the nerve to correct my dd's teacher. He writes on the homework page

"runners Monday's and Friday's"

He does it every week. It chewed me up 'til November and I am learning to live with it now....

Squirdle · 11/02/2009 20:07

I do something similar. DS1 has a dragon for a form tutor who puts big red X's but the parental signature if you haven't signed it. So when she forgets (which is quite often) I do the same for her

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 11/02/2009 20:07

heehee. I wish I had the guts to do that!

kookykid · 11/02/2009 20:14

Hmmmmm. Shame you don't know how to do apostrophes!!!

hannahsaunt · 11/02/2009 20:15

Dh is restraining me from pointing out that ds1 had not forgotten to use full stops but had instead used a series of semi colons completely correctly in his paragraph.

gingernutlover · 11/02/2009 20:16

am i setting ds up for purgatory?

no, she'll just think you're a picky parent with too much time on her hands

i teach reception and once spelled a childs double barrelled surname incorrectly (although I actaully copied it from the official register, that the admin lady fills out)

The mum told her son I couldn't spell his name and he spent the rest of the year pointing out how to spell his first name everytime I wrote it on the board. His first name has 4 letters and is extremely common - in the spelling sense) Bet you can imagine what I thought of her tee hee! And how hilarious I found it when she spelled my named incorrectky in a letter.

However, my dd is now at nursery and it does irk me a bit when her drawings come home with poorly spelled comments on them.

Well, when she replies correcting your punctuation, I guess you won't be offended.
(Pronouns don't require an apostrophe.)

gingernutlover · 11/02/2009 20:19

d'oh

obviously I type worse than I spell

Hulababy · 11/02/2009 20:21

If you are going to correct someone else's errors in their written work you really should ensure your text is accurate also.

CuddlyKelpie · 11/02/2009 20:24

Oh bugger, the guilt is starting to set in now!
I hope she isn't stressed and in danger of a sense of humour failure.

You might be right Hula, I wonder if I can tipex out the sp!.

Kooky, there is nothing wrong with my apostrophes thank you very much.

gingernutlover · 11/02/2009 20:27

hmmm weds night just before half term, yeah she's stressed.

LOL, seriously dont worry about it, scribble out the sp maybe

CuddlyKelpie · 11/02/2009 20:33

Well I stand corrected. Hers.

daisy5678 · 11/02/2009 20:37

YABU.

It's one thing making sure that your son knows how to spell it correctly. It's quite another to patronise and put down another adult, just to make you feel superior. Or to be funny. Or whatever...but that's the point: the teacher won't know why you did it and will just think you're a snotty cow.

CuddlyKelpie · 11/02/2009 20:43

Well that's a turnaround worthy of Tony Blair, I started off snickering to myself at the wickedness of correcting her spelling and ended up feeling guilty for provoking an overworked primary school teacher!

Must try harder.

Sorry to rain on your parade but I think that is really ,really rude .
What did you hope to acheive ,apart from humiliating the teacher in front of your child. You have done your DS no favours.

Bubble99 · 11/02/2009 20:49

DS1 (yr 6) had a piece of homework recently where he needed to write instructions for someone to look after his (imaginary) pet ..'......while your away'

pamelat · 11/02/2009 20:52

I would be tempted to correct grammar over spelling. I have no idea why.

I would not mind being corrected. I would mind the red pen type marking style of it though, I think thats a bit much.

Its difficult because you don't want your children taught incorrectly.

mamas12 · 11/02/2009 21:04

I actually corrected a sales assistant (about 12!) when I asked if they sol thermals he mused fermals i repied NO, THERmals. Needless to say it went over his head. My ds was embarrassed though (wink)

HateSponge · 11/02/2009 21:05

I could forgive isosceles.

I was somewhat horrified to read in my DC's busy book one parent's evening that Saturday had been spent shopping at Tescos (corrected to) Tescoe's

The worst of it wasn't the spelling but that we only shop at Waitrose.......

Kayteee · 11/02/2009 21:17

I home educate and was stunned when I received a letter from LA lady requesting an "inspection" (which they're not legally entitled to do...I digress). In it she wrote " I would like to see both you and your two dc/ I will be checking there progress AND would like to see evidence of there hand-righting". Beat that
