i'm just getting one and am being charged £300 which I think is a lot

EyeballsintheSky · 11/02/2009 12:11

Just checked and my dentist charges between £650 and £1000.

brimfull · 11/02/2009 12:15

xfabba-why is yours so cheap?

the nhs is probably a bit cheaper, i take it you have a private dentist, if it's private then £780 is about right.

lilstarry1 · 11/02/2009 14:47

WHAAAAAT?

I'd have probably been gob-smacking! That's ludicrous.
I need to pursue my daughters desires to be a dentist, think of the money I could save

SweatyArseCrack · 11/02/2009 14:49

Jeez louise pappa cheese.......what a rip off! WHAAAAAAAAT A RIP OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BASTARDS

xfabba · 11/02/2009 16:06

dunno - it's private too - no chance of an nhs dentist round here - you're worrying me now - maybe I misheard? I've got the temporary one on at the moment and paid £100 when I got that - going back next week for the fitting for the other one and I'm sure she said £200 to pay - maybe there is still £300 to go! I have been in near constant pain for over a year putting it off becasue of the cost of crowns and have finally had to do it - it's a ridiculous amount!

cheshirekitty · 11/02/2009 16:10

I have been quoted £3,000 - £4,000 to have a bridge done on my teeth. I am going to stick with the falsies.

my dentist is private and we are charged from £475 upwards depending on the type of crown. 475 would be for a small front, for the back ones unless you have mmega bucks the decision to take the tooth out is sometimes best.

minouminou · 11/02/2009 16:36

Sounds a tiny bit steep, but not unusual. For that amount, you should consider implants in the future, if you have any more teeth which may need crowning - you can get implants for around the same or a bit more, and they're a damn sight better.
Although the procedure is drawn-out over months, mind.
British teeth, eh?
Am feeling your pain (although thankfully, not literally).

bellavita · 11/02/2009 16:46

me too herbie - same price.

brimfull · 11/02/2009 17:29

I haven't agreed to it yet,if I do.
No pain as have had root canal treatment on it in the past and it's a dead tooth really.
SLightly awkward as this dentist is a friend of ours,he works for Smile franchise ,

two years ago we had the choice to be charged 250 for a crown made the usual way (whatever that is) or 350 for a hand made one.
I had the normal one which fits fine.
DH had the handmade one, which broke when they asked him to close his mouth.
That was a private dentist on the isle of dogs ("posh" part of it).

Karamazov · 11/02/2009 18:47

Not a bad price for private. I paid about that 5 years ago for my crown. we have since gone NHS, and its now £150 max for a crown (+ £45 I think for the other treatment). I haven't noticed much of a difference in standard of care!

yummytummy · 11/02/2009 19:07

the set price for an nhs crown is about £190. anything else higher than this is a private fee and at the discretion of the dentist. however depending on lab bills the cost to the dentist of getting a crown made can be between £300-£1000. so if the nhs fee is £190, u "do the math"

brimfull · 11/02/2009 19:31

can't really go to an nhs dentist now though and ask for a crown can I?
