to fancy my husband just slightly less for pinching mini soaps from a hotel?

He had an extended work trip and ended up staying in a hotel for quite a while. When he got back he proudly presented me with a bag full of mini soaps and another of mini mouthwashes.

I don't have any moral issue with it.

It's not very sexy though, is it.

We don't even use mouthwash.

lol at James Bond wouldn't do it.

There is something a bit mean and unsexy about taking hotel toiletries.

Not that I'm above pocketing the odd bar of soap or anything

Simplysally · 09/02/2009 11:16

Oh and if it was a present to you, no not sexy but as a resourceful thing to do to save a few pence here or there, full Brownie points to him.

troutpout · 09/02/2009 11:32

lol ..they weren't a gift were they?
(not as bad as the scented bin liners i once got for my birthday though)

dh takes the tea and coffee sachets too...for camping weekends

It's ingrained i think...he can't help it. His parents ( who are def not short of a bob or 2) used to cut the ends of his school shoes off in the summer to make 'sandals'

AliceTheCamelHasGotTheHump · 09/02/2009 11:45

@ horrifying school shoe / sandal hybrids.

YABU. I have done this before.

tiredsville · 09/02/2009 22:41

Dh, grabbed a handful of Molton Brown goodies from the chambermaid's trolley when she wasn't looking, I really had a go at him but was secrectly pleased.

"You are absolutely right, Alice.

My DP rather likes being compared to James Bond - good negotiation tactics."

Would this be a bedroom-type situation, Anna? I mean, does he like you to say 'oooh, James....!' in an indefinable foreign and sexy accent?

edam · 09/02/2009 22:53

hotels expect guests to take the little miniature soaps and shampoos so it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

edam · 09/02/2009 22:55

I got two pairs of slippers from a business trip to Bournemouth - shrink-wrapped, brand new (and clearly intended to be taken away). No idea why they put two pairs in the room as the booking was just for me, but was very handy.

BonsoirAnna · 10/02/2009 08:47

harpomax - not at all. It's more for situations where he needs courage and strength .

kalo12 · 10/02/2009 08:50

no its not sexy,
who wants a house full of clutter, and meanness and penny pinching is not attractive and taking things that you don't need, its well a bit immature isn't it.

YANBU

LackaDAISYcal · 10/02/2009 08:58

This is one of those MN splitting issues like grapes isn't it?

The are there for the use of the guest staying in the room. Whether they use them there and then or take them away is neither here nor there imo; it's factored into the cost of the room after all.

My DH does it (and I do too) as they come in handy for taking on holiday.

If it's done as present for you from his trip though then YANBU, but if he also brings you a bottle of something nice and smelly from duty free then YABU.

QuintessentialShadows · 10/02/2009 09:12

Last time I went to a hotel I came out with:

3 pairs of curtains
1 tv (shame the channels come preset so I cant change them)
2 remote controls
1 trourser press
1 shower curtain
1 shower curtain rod. (shame the rod is too long so I cant use it, but might use it to hang clothes on, as it is stainless steel and should be very sturdy)

There were no minisoaps, though.
I think the other guests had looted them.

I bet you dont fancy me AT ALL!!!!

LucyEllensmummy · 10/02/2009 09:30

YANBU - now if he had come back with molten brown goodies, the towels and the contents of the mini bar - THEN you could fancy him more

LucyEllensmummy · 10/02/2009 09:31

QS - i've always liked you, but after this revelation, i think im developing a bit of a crush

QuintessentialShadows · 10/02/2009 10:12

(not going to mention the extreme circumstances surrounding my shameless carry-out, but I left £20 at the reception ... )

onepieceofbrusselssprout · 10/02/2009 10:15

No shower cap QS?

You must have been disappointed.

QuintessentialShadows · 10/02/2009 10:26

as if I would wear one.... I did not look for it. Neither shower caps, nor sewing kits appeal, only tvs and such like!

MrsWilburton · 10/02/2009 10:28

everyone does

Sassybeast · 10/02/2009 10:50

I think if he'd given you the plastic shower cap as well........

expatinscotland · 10/02/2009 10:53

My auntie was a flight attendant up until about a year ago or so when she finally retired.

She had a gorgeous glass jar that she put mini soaps and such in and had it in her guest room.

samsonara · 10/02/2009 11:02

Eh, you lot are lucky, I wouldn't mind posh soaps, my dh is always off to conferences in 5 star hotels and all I used to get is some of the freebie pens they give away and he's even stopped picking those up now!

bluebump · 10/02/2009 11:04

If it makes you fee any better my DP steals sugar and mustard sachets from Wetherspoons!

I always take the free teas and coffee sachets as you never know when you are going to run out at home. My best freebie in a room was when we upgraded to Commodore class cabins on the ferry to Spain, you get a free L'Occitaine box set with a shampoo, conditioner and soap in.

As kids we used to beg to see my nan's huge carrier bag of soaps that she had taken from all the hotels she'd stayed in.

samsonara · 10/02/2009 11:05

but he nearly always asks if I want the conference bag..er no I don't want a bag with 25th annual conference of balardy blah do I?
