AIBU to expect sales folk to read my door notice?

I have a large notice on my front door. It says "No sales calls" "No fuel sales" (amongst other stuff). The "other stuff" is presumably read and accepted, as we have no Betterware/Avon/religious callers.
The sales people, especially the fuel sales, apparently just can't resist. They ring the bell most days. I have tried pointing to the sign and asking if they can read. I have had - "Sorry, I'm dyslexic"; "I didn't think you meant it"; "Yes, but this offer is so great I had to tell you anyway", amongst others:- ("Miserable bitch, just thought I would ring the doorbell to piss you off"!!!!!! - oh yes, you are soooo going to get my business, and I've seen your badge)
I know that folks have to make a living, but surely the door notice should indicate that I am really not interested? Why do these people keep ignoring my best efforts at saving their and my time? Their repeated calls really do challenge me to disprove the nickname
Does anyone else get this hassle, or am I just a magnet for timewasting tossers?

Miserable bitch??!!!
I don't get so many cold callers on the doorstep but I get loads of phone calls.
I always give the phone to my 8 yr old though and he has permission to talk about anything he likes...for ages (as long as he's not rude). They seem to hang up pretty sharpish once he starts asking them if they know about World of Warcraft.

Kayteee · 06/02/2009 19:11

YANBU btw

MannersCostNothing · 06/02/2009 19:19

Kaytee - PMSL at your DC chatting about warcraft and such. I am TPS which does pretty much stop the phone crap. Just wish they would stop the doorstep stuff. Nice to know I ANBU

oldraver · 06/02/2009 19:25

I'm on TPS but I'm still bugged by people who have my phone number as I'm a customer. BT are the worst offenders

MannersCostNothing · 06/02/2009 19:39

oldraver - I am not surprised at BT - they never give up, do they? We still get post for the previous owners after 4 years, but all that post is from - guess who - BT! I send it back with boring regularity. I kind of amuses me to make ruder and ruder comments each successive time I have to send it back but whatever I say, the useless post still keeps coming! What do you think I have to do to make it stop?

OP posts:
ravenAK · 06/02/2009 19:42

If there are any pre-paid envelopes in their, fill them with all your other junk mail & a nice note saying 'Dear BT, since you love junk mail so much, have some on me xxxx'

ravenAK · 06/02/2009 19:42

'there'!

southeastastra · 06/02/2009 19:43

you are a magnet for timewasting tossers

red rag to a bull those signs i reckon

MannersCostNothing · 06/02/2009 19:57

southeastastra - do you really think so about the door notice?

OP posts:
southeastastra · 06/02/2009 20:04

yes salesmen are pushy by nature a sign on the door would probably make them more determined.

MannersCostNothing · 06/02/2009 20:21

Heavens, I never thought of it that way! I thought salesmen were desperate by nature, but I never thought further than that! Maybe I could do a trial - take the notice off for a while and see what happens?

OP posts:
Kayteee · 06/02/2009 20:21

What about a poster with a giant, fierce, drooling, shark-fanged dog. With "I live here" written in large, red print?

southeastastra · 06/02/2009 20:23

kaytee that might do the trick

MannersCostNothing · 06/02/2009 20:27

Kaytee - sounds good, but I think they would just laugh. Maybe I should just unleash my really annoying barky jumpy dog (except dog would probably go off with salesman - hmm, need to think again)

YANBU We have a sign it is often ignored too, if the doorbell rings we ignore it unless it is a delivery. All friends and family usually call ahead or call on while outside.

Telephone sales callers I just say no thank you and put the call down and ignore there sales speak.
My mum is always thats so rude. Personally I find it far more rude to call up someone you don't know and get pushy.

fruitshootsandheaves · 06/02/2009 20:37

you should add on the bottom

If you insist on knocking please allow a couple of minutes for me to restrain my Rottweillers. If they should approach you as the door is opened please do not make any movements towards the door.

onadietcokebreak · 06/02/2009 20:43

Do you local consumer direct offer scam wise stickers. Its an official scheme thats says no to cold callers

2pt4kids · 06/02/2009 20:47

Or perhaps add at the bottom
'If you ignore this request then please note any sales persons I open the door to will be sprayed with cold water'
and keep a big water pistol by the front door!

MannersCostNothing · 06/02/2009 20:48

sleepyeyes - OMG - yes you are right - why can't I ignore the doorbell? My ishoos maybe? My Mum also thinks I am frightfully rude on the phone - she is of the very polite school = if she was being executed and bumped into the priest/chaplain/rabbi/whatever on her way to the gas chamber, she would apologise for being in the way. Not that my Mum is likely to be executed for anything

OP posts:
MannersCostNothing · 06/02/2009 20:51

2pt4kids - have you ever done that!!??

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 06/02/2009 20:53

We do what sleepyeyes does.

2pt4kids · 06/02/2009 20:53

No, we dont get sales people round here.
If we did, I'd try it though

I'm guessing they cant complain about you to anyone for doing it seeing as you warn them in the note beforehand?
Perhaps you could ask 'Did you read the note?' first and when they nod SPRAY THEM!!!

MannersCostNothing · 06/02/2009 20:58

You are dead lucky to have no sales muppets knocking on your door. Where on earth do you live and can I afford to by a house there?

OP posts:
sleepyeyes · 06/02/2009 20:59

Manners it's really hard to ignore the door (I even ignore the phone sometimes! ) it take quite a bit of training after all we are raised to answer the door and to not to is considered odd.
In November my postman threatened me for complaining about him that has really put me opening up the door to anyone I don't know and since then I feel quite liberated.
Although I do miss my debates with the religious callers.

sleepyeyes · 06/02/2009 21:01

We are moving in 6 weeks, 3 doors from my retired in-laws, got a feeling we will have to up our methods to all lights off and hiding behind the sofa.
