The teacher today told my 8 year old DS "No offense, but I always thought you were the naughiest child in this class. I now realise it isn't you at all, it's "Jack".

YANBU. It's Jason.

nickschick · 05/02/2009 19:57

Tell him to say 'my mum says youre the worst teacher in school and I believe her' arent they so powerful intimidating 8 yr olds grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

onepieceofbrusselssprout · 05/02/2009 20:05

Ime any statement prefaced by the comment "no offence" is meant to cause offence.

YANBU.

"no offence teacher, your bum looks huge in that skirt". (or any insult is fine, just put the "no offence" bit in first)

Exactly belgianbun. Also the same applies "I don't mean to be racist/racialist (sic) but..."

There are loads of these horrid phrases about.

She is not only unprofessional but imo has breached confidentiality.

Heated · 05/02/2009 20:13

Or "I don't mean to be rude..."

Sigh and say "...But you're going to be."

Re the teacher conversation, context is everything. I might say something like this jokingly to the two best behaved students in the class - but I do teach older children.

onepieceofbrusselssprout · 05/02/2009 20:17

or "don't take this the wrong way..."

Means that something rude/horrid/outrageous is about to be said but of course the recipient will be in the wrong if they do take it "the wrong way"

Sorry for the hijacks, this thread got me thinking.

duchesss · 05/02/2009 20:28

Or the worst one of all: 'I'm not being funny......'

onepieceofbrusselssprout · 05/02/2009 20:30

duchess I'm not being funny but how was that last post relevant to the thread?

Only joking!

onepieceofbrusselssprout · 05/02/2009 20:31

Sorry, duchesss

wotulookinat · 05/02/2009 20:45

well at least he's not the naughtiest in the class. I wouldn't be bothered.

troutpout · 05/02/2009 20:57

What a strange thing to say!
Particularly to a small child.
yanbu...it's very weird!

duchesss · 05/02/2009 20:58

yeah, funny brusselssprout

but actually, to go back to thread, I think YANBU. Definitely. I don't really think teachers in this day and age ought to be calling anyone 'naughty'. Aren't we in an era of 'label the behaviour and not the child' etc. ? I think I'd be quite concerned to hear of my DCs teacher making these sort of statements, labelling children, name-calling, etc. She's quite out of order, really.

Feenie · 05/02/2009 21:20

Sounds like the teacher was joking, to me. Can't see any teacher saying this seriously.

TheFallenMadonna · 05/02/2009 21:25

Doesn't it depend on how it was said?
