Sure I'll get flamed here but there you go.

8 wks pg have felt like death for last 4 weeks, steadily getting worse. yesterday went in felt sick, shaky, dizzy and exhausted. had to do an emergency overdose assessment of a 15 year old and didn't neccessarily feel totally safe doing it as had to struggle to think straight.

Felt worse this am, the usual eat to stop sickness trick isn't working and am absolutely shattered. feel a lot worse than I ever did when pg with dd when had no sickness throughout.

Concentration which is imperative in my job is in pieces, think I'm justified in staying off but I'm sure some on here will disagree with me!

yanbu
now turn off the pc and go to bed and rest

SheherazadetheGoat · 04/02/2009 11:04

yanbu

i had a gp pressing a sick note into my hand when i was suffering migraines during early pregnancy. i felt guilty taking time off cos i was 'only pregnant' but i felt horrendous. i only took a day or so off but it really helped at the time.

traceybath · 04/02/2009 11:04

If you don't feel well enough to work then you don't. Its nothing to do with others really.

I'm pregnant with dc3 (14wks) and have felt absolutely hideous - much worse than with previous 2 pregnancies so you have my sympathy.

Sipping evian (and yes for some reason it had to be evian) is the only thing that helps.

bamboostalks · 04/02/2009 11:04

If you are sick you are sick. Causes are not relevant in this case. Get off the pc though so you can rest.

pinkspottywellies · 04/02/2009 11:06

Don't see that it matters that the cause of the illness is pregnancy. You are too unwell to be able to do your job and as you say it is crucial that you are able - it's not like you're just sitting at a till/desk.

Get some sleep, eat as well as you can manage and look forward to the 'blooming' stage

MrsMattie · 04/02/2009 11:07

YANBU.

I took 3 weeks off work with my first pregnancy because I was so sick and dizzy. I was in charge of live radio broadcasts and was frightened we would fall off air or that I'd make some sort of monumental editorial cock up or something . I just wanted to lie down and be very, very still...

I had hyperemesis with my 2nd baby and thank God I am an SAHM, as I would have had to be signed off sick for about 4 months

It is not healthy or safe for you to be in work if you feel that unwell. Don't give it another moment's thought.

mrsgboring · 04/02/2009 11:09

Absolutely NBU. Why on earth should anyone judge you for taking time off ill whatever the cause?

dal21 · 04/02/2009 11:10

Not at all.

YABU if you had tried to work through it. If you don't feel well - stay home and rest. Listen to what your body needs right now.

minxofmancunia · 04/02/2009 11:11

Tis the NHS, not v good at looking after their own

YANBU. I had hyperemesis with DS and was signed off work for about 3 months. Felt bad because it was due to pregnancy, but just was too bloody ill to go to work. Tried a few times, and threw up on tube platforms/nearly passed out. Go get some rest.

Niecie · 04/02/2009 12:03

Yanbu - I had a week off with DS1 for exactly the same reasons and I didn't even have such a responsible job as you.

And for me, it helped. I rested, felt better, went back to work and was fine. Tiredness is definitely a contributing factor to how bad you feel generally so rest is vital. Having a day or two off now maybe will mean you are better able to do your job tomorrow or next week. At least I hope that is how it goes for you. Good luck.

Peachy · 04/02/2009 12:10

Tiredness is indeed a factor in nausea in pg itself (used to vollie on hyperemesis helpline years and years ago)
Had weeks and weeks off with it, couldn't be avoided- not safe to drive etc.

Dehydrations as well, as you will know OP, so get fluid'ed up (just to annoy the pedants ), rest and nibble little and often on carbs and water rich foods (melon, lettuce, ice pops0

Hope youa re feeling better soon.

cherrylips · 04/02/2009 12:21

i work for nhs too. i'm 9 weeks pg and feeling v delicate and shattered. with my 1st pg i had 6 consecutive weeks off with sickness. this me 3rd pg and i'm running an anxiety management group every friday (worse luck)!! So wanna go off sick, but will hang in there till after course finished, and then no stopping me if i feel ill!

Are u psychiatric nurse like me? Agree nhs so strapped for staff we feel really guilty when we are not well enough to do job.

Take time off to rest.

loobeylou · 04/02/2009 13:05

YANBU, you need to look after yourself and the bean

i was hospitalised for a week with hyperemesis,on a drip etc, tis truly foul, I found lemon chewing gum helped

Picante · 04/02/2009 13:08

GP will give you sick note. Go and rest and don't feel guilty!

ClaraDeLaNoche · 04/02/2009 13:13

Take as much time as you need, especially as it's your first pregnancy so you can really rest, as opposed to when you're pregnant with No 2. I had two rotten pregnancies and was always so jealous of people who breezed through it. It's all worth it though!

countingto10 · 04/02/2009 13:15

Go to your GP and get signed off and maybe get some medication.

Whilst I was in hospital with hyperemesis with DS2, the doctor who was looking after me told that her friend (also a doctor) had to take 2/3 months off with hyperemesis - it cannot be helped.

I also had incredibly low blood pressure with the sickness which made me feel one step up from death. Some days I could only manage ice cubes.

Hope it doesn't last too long
