To think a school with no heating should close today?

5 mm snow only so far but still going and we're predicted to be 'hit' around tea time (South Wales) with the main flurry.

School is refusing to shut, teachers wearing coats but not kids.

It's cold out there, if the snow is really bad there's a chance kids will be stuck (3 ways into our village, all involve steep drops- the sort that are marked with gravestones- 2 that go into rivers/ overlook valleys, one accident and the whole system closes for hours).

I think it woulod have made far more sense to send them home as they arrived, tbh. Most teachers have kids in local schools etc or live in the actual valleys so if snow worsens will need to go home anyway, and parents working know they will nee to get back into the village early or risk being closed off.

YANBU
The children's health (and that of their parents coming to collect them) should be paramount, how cold will they be? It's baltic.
Few weeks ago I had to pick up DS1 early due to snow and it was awful, so dangerous, like you, his school is at top of hill and I was petrified.
Can you go and pick them up anyway?

PeachyBAHonsPRSCertOnRequest · 02/02/2009 09:24

I'm OK lizzy safety wise- short walk, 23 minutes or so. They won't release them anyway.

Just seems silly, I cant see how they'll learn anything bar how to feel really cold.

IMO it should be closed.

Our school heating broke down last week. All children were taken to the assembly room for 2 hours, then when heating was fixed they went back to class.

DC said it was great. No work.

Back to answering the op, yes it should be closed.

NorktasticNinja · 02/02/2009 09:24

YANBU just go and collect them. Why did you even sen them in the first place?

PeachyBAHonsPRSCertOnRequest · 02/02/2009 09:25

2/ 3 minutes I should say- cross road and there.

The day unti across the road isn't allowing taxis in today onder how much they think we'll get? (bet it'll be 1cm and the kids will be sad).

there are rules actually about heating and when schools should close, just as there are for minimum temp in offices etc, and your school should also have a severe weather policy

if NO heating then I am they are open, unless it is something they expect to be fixed v quickly??

littleducks · 02/02/2009 09:29

I agree with you but the school is damned either way, see the thread whinging about how the country shouldnt stop running due to snow

PeachyBAHonsPRSCertOnRequest · 02/02/2009 09:31

Apparently they're deciding atm what to do.

Will they reallyc all round 200 parents though? Seems a lot of work compared to letting them go earlier.

Boys are wrapped up warm so should be OK but its a draughty old workhouse school at the best of times.

Kd yes Is aw that- butb its not just snow (though know as a SAHM I'm lucky ont his one as I'd love them to be home enjoying it- have done the WOHM thing so know how that feels too)

Flightattendant9 · 02/02/2009 09:32

Yes there is a minimum temp and it will have to close if the heating doens't get fixed sharpish. I think it's 17 degrees or something?

NorktasticNinja · 02/02/2009 09:39

Here, you have to scroll down quite a way."Minimum temperatures for classrooms are given as 18ºC in the Education (School Premises) Regulations, SI No2, 1999..."

PeachyBAHonsPRSCertOnRequest · 02/02/2009 09:40

YANBU.

Our schools closed when the heating packed up. They said it was in accordance with council policy and they re-opened next day with temporary radiators.

Same experience as ThePellyandMe.
