car park car wash men

OK, so I hate the constant cries of "car wash, madam?" as you try to get from car to supermarket in the cold and wind with toddler in tow anyway, BUT, I also have a very serious point to make......

why the HECK are they allowed to chuck water all over the blardy car park when it is flippin freezing cold?? Surely this must go against all health and safety (yes, i know some of that stuff is stark raving bonkers, but most of it is common sense rules for those who have none, and is there for good reason)

I know from a friend who works in the petrol station (same supermarket) that the big car wash has an automoatic shut off and does not work below a certain temp because of the dangers of lots of water on the ground freezing. And thats not even where lots of people are walking around! So why oh why is it apparently OK for this hand car washing to continue - even in the disabled and "mum to be" spaces, if you arrive early in the morning, you can still see the iced over puddles from the day before - surely this is an accident waiting to happen? if a heavily pg woman put her foot out of the car, or an elderly, frail, or disabled person did, straight onto a big patch of ice, there could be very serious consequences.

I speak as someone whose teaching colleage fell in a staff car park and broke her hip, and got a great deal of compensation! My nan and aunt have also had broken hips - nan took 6 months to recover and still walks with a stick/goes out much less on her own 2 yrs on.

so, am I talking sense, or AIBU - after all, who would envy them out in the cold trying to earn a living??

should i write and complain?

YANBU - if they are like the ones here - they wash the cars where ever they are parked in the carpark. Its ludicrous in freezing weather.

Haha some of our weekend workers earn almost as much as I do working 9-5 Monday to Friday, once you've factored in peak rate hours to pay them (and I don't get overtime at all whereas they do). I wouldn't care to work weekends though.

Our staff are on stepped pay rates so the more years they've been with us, they do earn more ph/get more holidays and fairly generous sick leave allowances. They're not paid under minimum wage (that would be illegal) and they do get London Weighting but the company has to make a profit somewhere so paying more than our competititors for the same role isn't a good idea as it ups the ante all round! Obviously they're not going to earn as much as white collar workers or professionals but that's more down to how society perceives their roles.

Oh glad to hear that all of the contractors are above board and not taking advantage of anyone, and that all the hospital cleaners are earning anti-social hours allowances etc.

Is it not possible that some contractors are less ethical than others? Just a thought...

Simplysally · 01/02/2009 12:41

It's very possible but that could happen in any industry. I don't think unethical employers are restricted to contractors though .

They never ask me..... possibly because it is so filthy they would require danger money to get rid of the biological experiments incubating in the footwells.

All of ours are done in marked bays. I would go to customer services and explain your concerns. They may not have thought it through.

Ozziegirly · 02/02/2009 06:09

I wish they had them here (Oz) - our car is filthy from tree resin and dust and salt and I would happily pay for someone to wash it once a week but it never occurs to me to actually take it to a car wash.

I specifically used to use a car park in Wimbledon because of the car washers!

frostyfingers · 03/02/2009 14:18

We have them in Tesco here, and they do put salt down and tidy up a bit if it's a muddy patch. They used to look hopefully at my filthy mud covered Land Rover but have given up asking now. When I had cleaned it once they even noticed! Poor boys, must be pretty soul destroying really!
