To make 2 cakes for DD's birthday party

In an unprecedented move, all of DD's invited guests are coming to her party so we have 16 children which is rather more than I expected.

I like to make her birthday cake myself but I'm not the greatest of cooks and know that there is no way I can make a cake for this number (plus DD, DS, DH, grandparents etc).

So I was thinking I'd do 2 smaller identical cakes. Then cut one before the party and put into party bags (which will save us a job on the day anyway) and save the other to bring out at the party and cut it up for any extra party bag slices required and family members.

question (I am a worrier!) - this seems like a perfectly sensible solution to me, but are other parents likely to think this is strange/complain that their DC only got piece of "secondary cake" etc?

I always make two cakes, one "show-off" cake (this year a 3-d steam strain!) and a party bag cake!
We normally have 2 parties though, one for DS's friends (party bag cake gets eaten) and family party (show off cake gets eaten!)

Yes!!!!! Make 2 3 or even 4 as long as you have enough cake!! Ds's latest party was slightly larger than expected and we ran out of cake!!!

How awful is that - the last few party bags didn't get any - even ds didn't get a piece

I've done that too - last year DS wanted a pirates treasure chest cake I managed it somehow, but the thought of trying to cut it in public terrified me, so I made a basic chocolate brownie recipe in a swiss roll type tin and smothered it in chocolate icing. I made sure each piece had some 'treasure' on it, and put into the party bags before the party started - much easier!

YANBU much easier to have more than one cake. It takes ages to cut and wrap up anyway. I've had parents waiting in the hall before while I've hurriedly cut and wrapped cake for party bags (apparently it was too tricky for DH!). Doing it beforehand is much simpler I'm sure no one will notice it's not the same cake....

I've doen this too on several occasions! Had show off cake to blow candles out on at party for friends, and one iced with same colour icing in party bags, then reused show off cake and eaten it with family. Very sensible!

We usually have 2 or 3 cakes - 1 already bagged up in party bags, 1 to sing "happy birthday" to and the other to give out to friends who weren't invited to the party (neighbour's children who are older etc...)

I think YABU! Don't make two cakes. Make one beautiful cake, for the candle thing and BUY a couple of those slabs of cake to cut up for the party bags! No point adding jobs to your 'things to do' for DD's birthday!

I made one cake for dd last year, and this was the one she blew out the candles at her party. We then ate this one on her actual birthday. The one in the party bags was a shop bought one which was sliced the morning of the party.
