To cancel DS' 1st Birthday Party?

He is 1 today! He has a party booked at a local hall on Saturday, but we are skint and just can't afford it. We thought we'd be able to manage it but it looks like we can't.

Should I just go ahead anyway? Part of me feels bad but the other part thinks it's a lot of fuss (we got talked into having it by my parents and I originally planned to have a tea party at home).

I would have a tea party at home, if your parents wanted it they should have offered to pay or help with the cost at least imo.

i personally would cancel it and have a teaparty at home if you wouldnt still end up paying or loosing loads in deposits etc. Maybe make an excuse saying you think ds is coming down with something and just in case would rather have it at home, then when sat comes and he is fine, just say im a silly mum worried over nothing!!!

Congrats on DS' first birthday! I'd do something at home. Local hall is a bit extravagant for first birthday and especially so if you can't really afford it.

Happy Birthday to your DS! Both of mine had parties 1 and 2 at home and then from 3 onwards a hall is a LOT easier than having it at home!
Have a home tea party and enjoy it

You may have to pay for the hall anyway at this stage. If so, and you may as well go ahead as that is the largest cost, just keep food really simple got to Lidl or Tesco for basic nibbles and juice, slice up long soft rolls filled with mashed egg mayonnnaise, marmite or tuna into bite size chunks, get your parents to bring something if they can, make a cake and have lots of balloons around, a tape of music etc. Who have you invited ?

Will you get your money back though, for the hall? Coz if not, it'll be the same price anyway, doing it at home.

Thanks to all who posted - have now got it sorted.

The people that run the hall (well, the Church really as belongs to them) have agreed to let me pay for it when DH gets paid - how lovely of them.

My Mum has offered to pay for the bouncy castle we are having due to the amount of older children attending (and babies who want a go too!) and the cake.

So all we have to arrange is some food and drink, and DHs Mum is going to help with that (she is the buffget food queen and makes the most amazing party food all from scratch - pavlovas, chicken and fish goujons and delish potato skins).

So...it looks like it's going ahead.

Amazing what people will help you with when you ask nicely!
