to be cross with sons nursery?

I really don't know if I'm being OTT but I was really upset today.

My DS 14 months has terrible nappy rash. It has erupted quite suddenly. He is being treated by the doctor with several different creams etc and awaiting a ped appointment.

I have told his nursery which he attends once a week that it is vital he is changed as soon as they suspect he is soiled as this makes the rash really sting and far worse.

He has also just had his MMR and not 100%.

On reflection I shouldn't have gone into work today, he should have been at home, nappy free and lots of TLC but I'm crap so what can I say

Anyway, I unpacked his bag this afternoon to find his trousers literally full of soild poo. This has never happened at home and he has disposable nappies etc. He must have been left in poo for a while.

I feel terrible for him as it must have been really painful. He has been soooooooo upset this evening.

AIBU and should I email/phone to complain/mention it

Help!

Mention it tomorrow as I sppose it could just e a case of routine changes so forget to change straight away type thing.

Of subjecta bit too but DS had really bad nappy rash for a while when he was a bout a year, after going to ee docs and peads many different creams laterrealisd he was allergic to the gel used in Huggies nappies and since then has been fine.

bubblagirl · 27/01/2009 21:01

you cannot prove that he was in it for a while could have had slightly looser poo due to injections but they cant take it off until his finished going anyway

best to have this as one off as unless i picked my son up and he was still in soiled nappy how can youm prove he was in it for long period of time or didnt have an upset tummy

ive also never heard of solid poo coming away from a disposable nappy even if been in it for a while only loose pooh has ever escaped my ds nappy

they could have removed nappy at signs of him going and his pooh has soiled his trousers instead

rubyslippers · 27/01/2009 21:01

yes you should mention it

a soiled child should be changed immediately, nappy rash or not

bubblagirl · 27/01/2009 21:02

poo too much pooh bear today i think lol

dizzydixies · 27/01/2009 21:03

nappy rash or not he shouldn't be in solid poo - would mention it to the head of his room tomorrow but just say he's got bad nappy rash, you noted he came home with a dirty nappy and could they please make sure he's checked more often

PlumBumMum · 27/01/2009 21:04

I think bubblagirl right you can't prove how long he was in the nappy for it might have been a runny one

Wolfcub · 27/01/2009 21:04

trousers full of poo do not necessarily mean nappy left full of poo - it could be that the nappy wasn't on tight enough or he wriggled partly out of it (this happened to us at weekend poo down trousers and on floor but not in nappy). If it were me I'd say you noticed he'd had an accident in his trousers and was there a reason.

tiggerlovestobounce · 27/01/2009 21:11

If the trousers were in his bag, and not on him, then I dont think you should be worried, he might have had a loose nappy because of the MMR. I expect if he had been upset they would have seen to him?

It sounds from your OP like you are feeling guilty for sending your DS into nursery? You made a judgement call at the time, and I dont think you should feel bad for sending him into nursery if at the time, on balance, you thought he would be OK. The nursery would have contacted you if they thought he was too ill to be there.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 27/01/2009 21:11

Thank-you. I just feel so terrible for him as he really is in a lot of pain. I also felt a bit cross as I had phoned at 10am and the same old 'get you off the phone quick' lady said he was fine, only to pick him up and be told he was crying on and off all day and wanting lots of cuddles!

I shouldn't have gone to work - lesson learn't.

Can't help much on the nursery front except to say if you think you're going to dwell a bit on it it's worth saying something to ease your mind.

I'm really posting about the rash, we had a similar thing when DS was around the same age and after lots of dr visits, food changes, going from cloth to disp nannies and back again a friend suggested tea tree cream which I got from a health shop and continues to work an like an absolute dream.

Hope your LO is feeling better soon.

izyboy · 27/01/2009 22:31

Trying.. just a tip - try putting a really thick layer of Vaseline over the Sudocrem/nappy rash cream you are using. It creates a seal over the cream and gives it time to work.

SlartyBartFast · 27/01/2009 22:37

ok to be cross, sorry about the nappy rash, but i don't honestly think you can mention the fact to them next time.
they presumably have a routine when they change nappies?
otherwise they would be far too busy surely?
perhaps they poo guages don't work, with so many in the same predicament
you have already mentioned the importance of regular nappy changes, so i wouldnt go in guns blazing , making them feel bad.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 27/01/2009 22:44

I know it must be hard slartybartfast, to keep an eye on so many bottoms.

We are going to try to keep the nappy off tomorrow.

What matanium (sp?) like? I got it this evening from the doc along with Timodine. DS screamed and screamed when we put on matanium bright yellow stuff, just hope it doesn't make it worse? The timodine is to be used 4 times a day and the matanium over the top etc....

My dd came out in a horrible rash on the bottom of her back (just the bit that would be touching her changing mat if her nappy was off and her vest was folded up underneath her IYSWIM?).

After checking everything at home I realized it was the cleaning stuff they used at nursery to clean the mats, they had recently changed it.

They have changed it now and she's fine, she has her own seperate changing mat and cleaner. Had to get steroid cream from the doctors to clear it up but she's fine now.

It was Asda surface cleanser BTW. We use Dettol occasionally or just wipe the mat with a baby wipe.

DD also has a sheet home with her showing when she gets her nappy changed, if yours has the same you'll see a pattern if its done as routine and not when they need it.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 27/01/2009 22:54

I almost wish it was something like this hippo, but it started after an ellergic reaction to Zinco Spray starting off the nappy rash. Thanks anyway!

teeth really do also cause bad nappy rash - he could have all sorts making it worse!

id be surprised if they dont change asap - its smelly for them too and they wont want to make his nappy rash worse im sure

maybe he just does need a day or two off to get back to 100% - perhaps share it with your dp if work will mind?

bubblagirl · 28/01/2009 10:06

oh and the lady who said all was ok was not wanting you to worry probably they are used to children crying so theres no point in making huge fuss about the fact he was upset on and off you would have spent more time worrying amnd feeling guilty and if there was a huge problem they would have told you

no need to alarm a parent for some crying you would have beaten yourself up a bit more

you did what you ahd to do have a few days now no nappy if you can clean with cool water and then cream and lets hope it clears soon your doing a good job dont feel guilty x

Marthasmama · 28/01/2009 10:15

We use that M cream. The HV recommended it when DD had a terrible, bleeding nappy rash. It worked like magic but it didn't seem to sting her. She was only 2 weeks old at the time so I suspect it would have evident if it had hurt! I use it everytime she starts getting rashy and it takes care of it immediately. It does smell strong so I can imagine that it could hurt. Poor little fella, hope he feels better soon.
