To apply for this job?

Quickish brief of my current job.

I am working in a Coffee Shop. I do 17 hours over 3 days and although I enjoyed it at first I've grown to hate it.
There's been a bullying issue (not really resolved but has stopped for now it seems), the Boss is totaly unapproachable and we've all been left hanging for 3 weeks now as to whether we will have jobs next week! There's a staff meeting tomorrow night so at least I'll know if I have a job and what my hours will be if they are to be changed.
I'm a lone parent on tax credits.

Anyway, one of the girls is also fed up and wants out. She has been applying for jobs and has told me of one coming up shortly in a school kitchen. It's 30 hours a week, and of course will be term time only.

I have no experience working in a kitchen so probably wouldn't get it anyway but would it be wrong to apply?
I wouldn't say I'm friends with this girl, we have no contact outside of work but I still feel it's maybe wrong to do this, but then I'd love a term time job so should I put myself, and DD of course who will benefit first?

I had a friend steal a saturday job from under my nose when I was a teenager and I was really angry, but it did teach me the valuable lesson of keeping my gob shut in the world of work.
YANBU to apply - best of luck!

happybeingme · 28/01/2009 10:08

I think it is a bit of a sneaky thing to do - sorry. YABU.

muggglewump · 28/01/2009 16:08

I agree that it's a bit sneaky, however after posting on here I think it's ok to be sneaky in this situation.

I phoned the school this morning and they said any jobs will be advertised through the job centre so I'll keep a look out. I've requested an application for another similar job though so should get that tomorrow.
The downside of it is that it includes Saturdays but I think the term time only will make up for it.

I don't think it is sneaky. All is fair in the job market especially in the current climate. I wouldn't be happy if someone did it to me of course but I would understand why.

muggglewump · 28/01/2009 20:34

I went to the work meeting tonight and my hours have been cut from 17 to 13 which leaves me out of a job as from next Friday.
My CM got her friend to get me an application for the job in my PP, the one that includes Saturdays and I've filled that in and it will go back to the school tomorrow and I will apply for anything else suitable.

Right now I'm past caring if it's sneaky or not, I'm gutted and do not want to go back to a life on Benefits

oh no muggle how shit

maybe this is a door opening for you somewhere else for you? you said you weren't too happy at your job

muggglewump · 29/01/2009 15:55

I'm not happy at it, but I never want to be out of work again. I really can't stay in it though as I can't afford to pay my childminder.
I've applied for another one today, lower than the 16 hours I really want but it's term time only in school hours, actually in a nursery just 1.5 hours a day and the £20 I'm allowed to earn will cover my train fares.
At least it will look better for my CV that I'm still working and it won't leave me worse off.

Here's hoping I get something and soon.

good for you for keeping on trying. Did you try your local council website?

Divineintervention · 29/01/2009 18:31

Go for it! Good luck.

newlysinglemummy · 29/01/2009 18:35

No go for it, it would be great for you and your dd.

muggglewump · 29/01/2009 18:44

Yes, I've applied through the council website for the job I've mentioned in my pp.

I'll be checking every site every day.

I've to go into the Job Centre and Housing office tomorrow to re-apply for benefits although I won't be eligible until next Friday when my hours are officialy cut, it means the forms will be ready to go so hopefully I won't wait too long for any money.

Thing is mugggle, with an attitude like yours, you just can't fail

It may not always be smooth as life never is of course, but seriously, approaching it the way you do, it will be fine in the end I'm sure! Good luck.
