Am I being unreasonable in thinking that the school could have told us sooner that the heating was broken?

Our school is 2 1/2 miles away, we have to drive due to where we live, and the kids have to be in school for 8:55. We leave at 8:45, but this morning just as we where about to leave the phone rang. It was the school saying the heating was broken and so school was closed. Apparently the heating was broken yesterday, but they kept the kids in school in the cold, with their coats on .
Am I wrong to think they could have phoned yeasterday, for us to pick the kids up, and also could'nt they have phoned sooner this morning, especially with most of the staff having been in school ready for the early ones arriving for breakfast club?

yabu

becuase if the heating broke yesterday they may have thought they could fix it yesterday.

Perhaps it got fixed in the evening, and broke down again that morning?

I am quite sure they would have done what they could, I mean how many did they have to phone?

I can't imagine our school office staff getting thru to everyone in time.

oldraver · 27/01/2009 17:01

If they knew it was broken yesterday then you should of been told then, cant understand why not. Had it of broken this morning then I suppose it would take AGES to phone all parents so imagine someone would be given short notice

I was phoned at 7.15am, again breakfast club get in early, to be told heating was off.... was a good hour before I usually get up and was monosyllabic.....

pooka · 27/01/2009 17:01

Am impressed that they managed to ring you before you left.

Imagine there were lots of people to ring, lots and lots. Bet a fair few people only found out when they got there. Even if they hadn't managed to get hold of you, it's a 10 minute drive which is nothing really.

compo · 27/01/2009 17:02

yes you should think youraelf lucky you got the call before you left!

laweaselmys · 27/01/2009 17:02

There is no way they will have 'most' of the staff in for the breakfast club, probably only three or max four would be plenty. They therefore were probably busy trying to get the parents of those children notified, or back home if they'd already been dropped off.

Yabu.

How many pupils are there at your dc school?

pooka · 27/01/2009 17:04

There are 3 reception staff at our school. 420 pupils. Even if 3 additional staff were drafted in to call, they wouldn't all be there at the crack of dawn.

So let's say 6 staff, 300 phone calls (because will be siblings). That's 50 phone calls each. 3 minutes each call. 150mins. 2 and a half hours straight.

Obviously your school may be different size, but am still impressed.

dmo · 27/01/2009 17:13

they could have just stuck a big sign on the school gate
SORRY SCHOOL CLOSED TODAY DUE TO HEATING
you were lucky that you didnt drive all the way there for nothing

Hulababy · 27/01/2009 17:16

The teachers and staff may well have had to be in school anyway, regardkless of broken heating. IME that has been the case when a school has closed.

I guess they were hoping to have the heating fixed by the morning, hence leaving it til the morning to ring.

I can understand why the kept the children at school yesterday - it would have been a nightmare to call every parent up, and get them t school in time before the end of the school day anyway. Plus some parents may have found it very difficult to just drop things and go in early.

leya · 27/01/2009 17:18

I suppose im more hacked off from yesterday, for keeping the kids in the cold. I have 4 in the same school, and when I asked if they had tried to call me, they said they had'nt made the desided whether or not to close the school. The heating broke at 9:45, the kids come out at 3:15.

and tbh it wasn't that cold yesterday (Where we are anyway) we spent 4 hours outside with both kids and they were fine.

They could just get the kids jumping about. Also if the heating was on earlier the school wouldn't have been bitterly cold.

p.s the school also have a new notification policy. I fthe school is going to be closed for any reason, or there are any problems, they will notify parents via email, or our local radio, but nothing!
