to expect not to have to pay the best part of a grand on a car we brought from a dealership 1 year ago...

Ok so it's a long story. We have a 2005 Renault grande scenic. Bought last January from a renault dealers.

Dh is in the navy and was sent away on the 3rd Nov. He put the car in teh garage (I do not drive). Anyway unbeknown to us the garage leaked and we think the car got damp.

The alternator is apparently shot. We had it towed to the dealership last thursday and after some looking at it they quoted us £460 for replacing the alternator, mot and servicing the car.

They rang us back today and told us they had made a mstake and actually the price would be £710. We cant afford this, the car is literally just out of warrenty. If dh had come home a couple of weeks earlier, this would prob have ben free.

We tried to plead to their better nature at which point they said they would not charge us labour and they would supply the part at cost price. Reducing the total bill to £570. TBH this is still too much. We dont have a lot of money.

We rang a friend who runs an independent garage and they have told us they can supply and fit an alternator for £230.

The first poblem is that we ould need to get our car back renault have it at the moment. And it doesn't drve so we need to get it towed. We can work around this.

The second problem is that Renault already took our old alternator out and attempted to fit another one. They then realised they had were trying to fit the wrong part and had to take it off again.

Dh doesn't want to pay them any money for the work they have done as they are a renault dealers they fix hundreds if not thousands of renault cars per year and they should know what part to ft on his car. They are supposed to be specialists for goodness sakes.

We haven't as yet told them that we want to pull our car out of their garage, but would be wthn our rghts to do so without paying them a penny?

Sorry for the moan/rant. Just trying to see how to get around this.

yes you can, they made the mistake and changed the quote. Any work they did before a quote was agreed is surely their problem.

Any chance though you can say you've had a much cheaper quote and ask them to match the original price as they're clearly over charging you.

Thanx we are in the process of trying that. Dh is just trying to gather as much info/amo as he can to throw back at them when he phones them in a bit.

I think i remember rightly in saying - an official quote cannot be altered in the event of a problem arising after work has started but an estimate can be altered as an when the nature of the work changes.

If your 'quote' was over the phone then the likelyhood would be that it was just an estimate

Sorry

Oh and £710 is a lot of money but not more than i would expect for the work undertaken and the service and mot too... especially from a dealership.

would agree its a good idea to tell them the price your other garage gave you

also did you actaully ever agree to have work done?
