To actually look forward to taking DS on his first trip to the theatre ?

Even if it is only the stage version of (ahem) Spongebobsquarepants, well it was either that or Lazytown and I can't bear that awful man.

I am v. excited about it and thing DS will have a great time. As the tickets are expensive I said to DH that perhaps only one of us should go with DS expecting him to perhaps want to go what with it being DSs first time and all, well he was overjoyed about it and said it was great that he didn't have to go. Then I told my friend and she was saying that her friends DH would rather have his teeth pulled than accompany his children to a stage production.

Ok I know that the old Spongebob is not exactly Romeo and Juliet, but DS is only 2 3/4 and I'm not expecting high drama. I am however childishly thrilled about DS enjoying it and the whole experience of taking him to the theatre and getting our ice creams and it being a special event. I was the same about his first cinema trip.

Am I freakish and sad about looking forward to this and is it a pfb thing?

YANBU

I take the boys to our local theatre and they love it.
we went to see the
gruffalo
tiger who came to tea
jack and the bean stalk
and in the summer we are going to see the BFG

the boys have loved it each time and are really looking forward to going again.

DS1 is 4 and DS2 is 2.

Enjoy!

My DH has grown up in acting and theatre [sweetie dahling emoticon] and has always taken DD to the theatre to see lots of kids productions from when she was about 2 and a half. However, I am taking her to see Mary Poppins in April and I absolutely cannot wait! It's forty quid a ticket so only the two of us can go but she loves the film so much I know she's going to be in raptures over the stage production

Oh good I'm glad its not just me. It just appeared to be one of these things that you are meant to moan about, but I won't because I'm looking forward to it.

£40 a ticket, gosh. I thought it was expensive enough at £32 for the two of us, and that is with a half price ticket for DS. I'd love to see Mary Poppins, but I think DS would be too young for that yet.

YANBU (well maybe a bit odd to enjoy Spongebob, but needs must...)

Can't wait till A is old enough to see a show at the Polka Children's Theatre or similar. And I've gone with friends' kids to Shockheaded Peter and Lion Witch and the Wardrobe and loved watching them being amazed by theatre.

Hoping that High School Musical dies out before A gets to the age of wanting to see it, though... and isn't replaced bu something worse...

Im hoping to take my ds to see Sister Act in the West End.......as long as i can make him realise that his precious Whoopi wont be on stage!!

I can't wait to be able to take the boys to see chitty chitty bang bang - but I will not pay big money to travel into london and see a thread just incase it goes wrong.

Thunderduck · 26/01/2009 17:09

YANBU, though perhaps slightly unhinged for wanting to see anything involving Spongebob.

VinegarTits · 26/01/2009 17:09

I took my 2yr ds to see Cinderella at the Theatre and he loved it, he wore a pink tiara and fairy wings

And now he makes me tell him the story of when he went to see Cinderella at bed time so i have to re-live it every night

VirginiaWoolf · 26/01/2009 17:11

Hmm, don't wish to be a prophet of potential doom, but DS lasted less than 60 seconds when we went to see a panto recently!!!! The noise (even just people talking in the auditorium when we went in) spooked him a bit, and he started howling when the lights went down.....

Really not trying to sound negative, just I suggest that you prepare DS for the theatre experience!

VinegarTits · 26/01/2009 17:15

My ds wasnt fazed by it at all, in fact the opposite, highly excited by the crowds, the noise and darkness

Guess it depends on the child

rookiemater · 26/01/2009 17:23

DS has been fine at the cinema so I think (fingers crossed) he will be ok. Perhaps I am unhinged I don't actually hate Spongebob too much ( worrying admission).

Am realising though that perhaps I have made a social gaffe for booking Spongebob. Everyone elses first theatre experiences are for worthy productions based on books or traditional story, mine, oh shame is based on a TV cartoon that isn't even on Cbeebies.

Head down in shame, where do I hand back my Boden coat and NT membership card.

I do vicarious enjoyment. I like doing stuff with DS just to see him enjoying it. DH doesn't. His loss!

Tommy · 26/01/2009 17:37

not at all! I love taking my DSs to the theatre

loobeylou · 26/01/2009 17:53

DS almost 4 has been to 2 pantos (age 2 and almost 4) and Fimbles stage show when he was just 13 months. He LOVED it, danced up and down on my knee the whole time

we are going to see Tales of Peter Rabbit for a birthday treat, we are ALL (DH too ) excited about it.

Enjoy OP!
