to be annoyed that the supermarkets only ever seem to have unhealthy stuff on offer?

I want to do an online shop and have checked out Ocado, Tesco and Sainsburys. Loads of offers on cakes, biscuits and crisps. I want some fruit and veg and they have very little of that on offer.

Why does it cost so much more to eat healthy food?

That always bugs me too. The Morrisons adds always make me laugh. They say all about the current climate and making things easier for us and they're flogging crates of beer for a tenner. Hardly top of the shopping list when you're strapped for cash!

You know, this always makes me wonder.

In the news all we hear about is obesity rising, childhood obesity, the crisis of the nation .... yet I can fill my freezer with processed, nurtitionally questionable food for under £20 for the week.

To eat healthily MOST of the time will cost me upwards of £40-50 for me and DS...!

It's utterly ludicrous IMO

YANBU - I too have noticed this. (Just did an online Sainsburys.)

Unless you want tons of fruit (16 tangerines for £2) or pomegranetes (sp)(2 for £2.50)it's pretty dire.

However, Cadbury's and Doritos seem to have never ending offers!

loobeylou · 25/01/2009 22:00

Agree, though they are trying - buy the basics F&V, and tesco do have 5 half price F&V a week don't they?

save by buying non perishables in bulk when BOGOF, then you have more for the fresh stuff later

differentID · 25/01/2009 22:01

Drives me crazy.

its all about what the supermarkets have to pay for the stuff and what they think will get people through the door.
most supermarkets sell beer as a loss leader, they actually make a loss selling 20 bottles of becks for a tenner but the chances are if you go there to buy it you will do the rest of your shopping there or will at least buy some other stuff.
fruit and veg and meat has a shorter shelf life to products like crisps so it cost a supermarket more because they have to rotate stock/sell it off cheap;y at end of shelf life more than they do with junk food.

girlylala0807 · 25/01/2009 22:11

I think part of the problem is they cant demand a huge reduction on fruit and veg from farmers who have very low profit margins anyway.

With the huge junk food companies, they often make them cover the costs of the offers just to ensure they get a good space to sell their stuff in the supermarket iyswim.

Supermarkets dont make a huge loss on these offers.

pollywobbledoodle · 25/01/2009 22:13

lidl always has fruit and veg as its main loss leader

asda's flier has tuna, bread, fruit etc on offer

both plus bogof crap....but we try and be selective, change supermarkets regularly and leave the crap

kikid · 25/01/2009 22:34

All i've noticed is the post christmas promotions on 'healthy' stuff eg. weight watchers crap, low fat biscuits, fat free ice cream etc...

They seem to think everyones on a diet!! Today my usual tuna in oil is more expensive than tuna in blardy sping water (uggg)!

christywhisty · 25/01/2009 22:39

Tesco have a lot of fruit and veg on special offer and they usually do 3 packs of meat for £10 which usually do us 3 or 4 meals

mileniwmffalcon · 26/01/2009 09:41

if you look in the main "offers" pages for sainsbos online there's often not much there for fresh stuff, but if you go into the aisles each one has an offers section and there's always loads of offers. of course, at sainsbo prices 20% off might still be priceye, especially for airfreighted exotic fruit, but there's a fair share of buy one get one frees and 50% offs too.

i buy almost all 'proper' food, very little processed stuff, and i've got 15% off my total current shop using offers.
