To want to go to Ikea, even though it's dangerous...

JackBauer · 22/01/2009 14:17

All I want is a few metres of their fabrics.
That's all.
No funky kitchen gadgets
No cool toys.
No 'little things I never knew I wanted'

The style of fabric I want can only be from Ikea, I very rarely go past on my own (DH less that is) and DD's and I are going to be coming home past Cardiff on Monday. We could stop for lunch which would mean I wouldn't have to rush home to cook.

But how do I stop myself buying everything I see browsing.

it's a problem.

Funny thread

Our family LOVE ikea! We go there purely to wander around. It is dangerous though....

princessmel · 24/01/2009 17:29

In fact once, when dh and I had had a row, after we'd made up, I just wanted to do something 'together' that we love, so we chose to go to ikea.!! Mad maybe, but it was a lovely lovely day.

(PM is aware that she sounds like a loon)

jtbgogogo · 24/01/2009 17:31

does anybody elses 8 yr DD still constantly have to be reminded about pleases and thank yous. Any tips on how to tackle it - it's driving me mad!!!!!!

scotlass · 24/01/2009 17:32

I'm so glad it's not just me. DH and I went to buy a replacement photo frame last weekend and came home with a £300 bed for DD which took 4 hours to put together (my pg brain kept getting the screws mixed up)

tinseltot · 24/01/2009 17:42

princessmel, i am so glad that you admitted that. I will now confess that i find Ikea to be ROMANTIC!

Seriously, i always get loved up in there. i find myself holding and squeezing dp's hand, kissing and cuddling him etc as we go round. I really think that Ikea feeds the need to feather your nest with your partner.

Once, many years ago, i went to ikea when i was single. I actually found myself close to tears. Everywhere i looked, everyone was in couples, smiling at each other lovingly and planning their perfect futures and homes together (or so it seemed!). Also i had no one to carry my heavy purchases for me!

I once broached this topic (i.e. is ikea a romantic venue?) in work and the split was about 50/50 in agreement/disagreement. Interestingly, as many men as women agreed it was romantic.

princessmel · 24/01/2009 17:50

I agree tinseltot! Lots of hand holding and kissing going on. No tongues mind you ;)

on the other hand dh does get stressed in the textiles dept....he needs to be led through hat bit quickly.

tinseltot · 24/01/2009 17:59

Yeah i should have made it clear that even ikea doesn't make me kiss with tongues in public! Shamefully tho I will admit to once groping dp's bum seductively in the bedroom department whilst looking at a lovely round bed. Don't know what came over me! Decided against buying the bed tho as felt that the risk of falling out was just too great.

I have to say I don't find it romatnic, but DH gets very antsy anywhere with crowds so he hates it and just wants us in and out. Which is why I never take him.
Although last time we went in for a tv cabinet we came out with a coffee table and a lamp even he isn't immune!

On the plus side I bought a black potty last time we were there and they are quite high, so it is the only potty long legged DD woudl use to start with...

Am desperately trying to stop myself browsing the website....

i dont really go to ikea anymore, if we go i have to take mil to referee...if i ever want a divorce i need only take dh to ikea and our marriage will be over

cocolepew · 24/01/2009 20:53

I went today and spent £11 on 3 things.

Mind you I only was stopped from buying a £150 rug because my Mum shouted at me dragged me away.

Boco · 24/01/2009 21:00

My dp sounds like yours Jack. He hates it. One time we went he had a terrible tantrum in the car park and said that he would never leave the house again. We lost the car keys and he ended up spinning on the spot and shaking his fist at the sky.

But I got some really good storage solutions. [bright side]

The last time was much better, although he turns into the terminator and does this weird focused stride and scary stare.

5inthebed · 24/01/2009 21:20

I will be going to the mothership Ikea on Tuesday. I need some storage for my ds1's bedroom. I'm going with my dad instead of DH, as DH is a miserable git and hates Ikea I'd say that was perfect grounds for divorce dont you?

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 25/01/2009 13:14

My DH and I went to Ikea yesterday, we were hopeless restrained and stuck to just the cot and mattress for baby due in few months.

Oh, but we did buy more bowls, glasses, mugs, 17 pieces of Tupperware stuff for £2.99, drawers, tea towels, laundry baskets, plates, kitchenary crap.

Oh and we did eat meatballs and cakes and then buy hot dogs on way out.

So, £100 odd quid later, we'd planned to spend £40 odd (yes, I know we're cheapskates but the baby won't give a stuff, DD2 had the very same cheapo cot and it was marvellous).

I think an overspend of £60 is very good....

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 25/01/2009 13:16

Oh and Boco, PMSL at Terminator DH shaking fists at sky.......

LyraSilvertongue · 25/01/2009 13:52

Tinseltot, yes I do love my Ikea kitchen. smile every time I catch a glimpse of it. And I stroke it sometimes. And stand and marvel over the soft-close drawers [sad emoticon]
My DP hates Ikea too so I try not to take him. Even when I went last week to buy a new bed and struggled with all the heavy boxes and the mattress on my own, it was still worth it not to have him there complaining about the crowds and trying to hurry me up.

nomoreamover · 25/01/2009 17:46

YANBU - Ikea rocks!!! I WISH WISH WISH we had one nearer to us than Bristol which is like nearly 2 hours away!

SoupDragon · 25/01/2009 17:48

I live 10 minutes from Ikea. I pop in after the school run sometimes, have free coffees between 9:30 and 10am and am usually out of the store by 10:30. [happy sigh]

TheMolesMother · 25/01/2009 18:27

Our nearest one is in Dijon. Both hubby and I find it very difficult to get out of the place without spending money on stuff we never knew we needed till we crossed the threshold of IKEA.

One of our best buys was a cuddly rat who now lives in the bread oven of the unused stove in our family room. Hubby's keeping a tally of the children (and adults) who own up to finding him .

Friends of ours called in to the Dijon IKEA on their way back from visiting us. She said it was weird as the place was identical to the one she normally shops in except the prices were in euros. Like straying into some strange parallel IKEAverse.

Glad that you are enjoying it so Lyrasilver. You are a lucky girl. Just hope that i too get my turn one day!

Katrina, that is a really good idea re having 2 toddler beds down one wall to save space. Will do some measuring to see if that would be an option for us. We eventually want bunk beds for DD#1 and dd#2 but at 4 and 18 months they are too small at the mo.

Soup am slightly green at learning of your proximity to the holy grail and the free coffee opportunities that this presents. have one for me next time you are in.

Grumpy, you did really well. To come out having spent £60 in excess of planned is pretty restrained. And you have lots of lovely new produce to enjoy!

Am laughing at all the stories of irate husbands getting upset in ikea and fist shaking etc. It defo seems to be a marmite situation. Love or hate. We are about 50 mins from our nearest ikea so we tend to go only about 3-6 times a year. DP is quite well behaved in there. I think he feels the romance too!

fruitbeard · 25/01/2009 19:05

We went today to look at children's beds and sofas and came out having spent....

£3.89 on a fairground ride outside and then in the cafe on coffees and water!

It helped that we had DH with us who is world's grumpiest shopper - 'no, no, no, don't like it, looks like it comes from IKEA (wtf?), don't like it, ugly, do you have to sit on every sofa in the shop?' etc etc etc.... which kind of puts a damper on things. Then we more or less ran through the marketplace because I could tell he was about to blow a fuse and so we made it out of there without spending a bean...

JackBauer · 25/01/2009 23:14

inspiring stuff!

I have a big problem though. My mum hasnt bought DD11's birthday present yet and has given me cash to get her the easel, whiteboard, markers and chalks from ikea as her present. Which means I have to go into the toy section.
Shit.
