medised?

I have not used this yet.

I am aware that the rules changed last year and that it should not be used for babies under 2.

My GP friend has told me that this is largely because parents were abusing it and using it more as a sedative to get babies to sleep through the night even though they were not poorly

My DD is 12 months. She has had a cough seriously for 3 months. My actual GP's are not bothered (I have been 4 times about it). She is full of cold, teething and if she feels anything like me (also full of cold) she feels miserable.

I went to the pharmacist and said I had a 6 year old and bought medised. I know thats wrong.

However, I dare not use it as I am so scared that it could harm her. However, my GP mummy friend says that it will not and she uses it on her 12 month old. Obviously no GP or pharmacist is going to tell me this officially.

So to use or not to use?

I need to relieve her symptons and it seems sad that nothing is working (tried calpol/nurofen etc etc) I know that medised must never be used with calpol etc.

What do you think?

I use it for my 1yo, but will onyl use it once in 24hrs to be on the safe side. So only ever at bedtime. At other times I will use calpol or nurofen if I think they need something

Don't see the harm in using it for what its intended for, iyswim. Ie as a painkiller / to relieve congestion.

BUT it does make my DDs grumpy. Esp DD2, who tends to wake up in the middle of the night miserable and groggy when its worn off. Grumpy toddler at 4am = sheer joy.

Hi piratecat, he mentioned it but said that they "never diagnose asthma in under 2's" and yet my friends DS was diagnosed at 7 months old. Maybe his is more severe.

So, no he has not nor does he want to test her. I feel a bit frustrated with my GP surgery and am considering a move.

I would use it, but only while your DC is poorly and only at night time. And try to just use it once in ant 24 hour period. Use Calpol or Nurofen the rest of the time if you think your DC needs it. And remember that it counts as a dose of paracetamol so that you don't exceed the total number of doses that are recommended in any 24 hours.

My doctor told me to use it on mine when she was 18month - looked at me vaguely despairingly when I said I was concerned about using it- and it really does seem to dry up the congestion and not just knock them out (actually I never found it that great at knocking her out!)

kizzib · 22/01/2009 14:41

don't the pharmacists take your name and CHECK that your dc is of age to use it? Sorry if I sound thick, not sure how they work?

wontbepreggersagain · 22/01/2009 14:45

our doctor suggested medised for dtd's aged 11months- said it was the only thing worth taking when they had snot running down their faces and teeth popping out all over the place

Give it, but just be sensible about it.

I've used it with ds from abut 3 months (it still says that on the box). As long as you stick to the correct dosage for the age then you are not using it as a sedative are you? It has (I think) I mild muscle relaxant in it and if my ds is teething or is unwell and has difficulty settling then I give it to him to get him to go to sleep but that is not from a selfish point of view for myself, that is because he needs to go to sleep and I know medised helps when he is in a state.

Also as a general rule here, I don't tend to use paracetamol as find ibuprofen works quicker and is far more effective.

PuppyMonkey · 22/01/2009 15:42

Medised is always out on the shelves of my local Boots, so anyone can buy it!

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 22/01/2009 15:45

use it - we dont use it often and didn't use it at all with DS1 but with DS2 he has had so many more coughs and colds and so we have.

I don't ever use it if they aren't ill and don't use it more than about once or twice per illness but it gives us all a bit of a break.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 22/01/2009 15:46

I would use it. You know why you're using it and it's an appropriate use to help your dd.

mejon · 22/01/2009 15:52

I tried to buy some at my local Lloyds Pharmacy yesterday (DD is 2.5, full of cold and back teeth coming through) but they wouldn't sell me any as they'd had to remove all packs from their shelves for repackaging. I did mention that the new guidelines had been in force for about a year now and that I'd previously bought some from them back last Spring but no-go. Got some in the Co-op Pharmacy instead which had been repackaged. I forgot to give it to DD last night but will defintely give some tonight as she's been grumpy and unusually quiet all day. I only give it before bed and only with a cold.
