to be cross about baby guinea pigs?

DCs are 10 & 7. I have consistently said 'no' to guinea pigs on the basis that I am not keen on small rodents, they are a bind when we are going on holiday and I will probably end up doing all the looking after once the novelty has worn off.

So at the weekend, DH goes out and buys 2 babies, complete with hutch, straw, all the gubbins.

He used his own money, says he and the kids will take full responsibility. Kids are ecstatic and I am the Big Bad Mummy.

AIBU?

YANBU for being cross that DH over-rode your authority but YABU for not liking piggies

Littlefish · 19/01/2009 17:42

No, you're absolutely not being unreasonable.

At the first sign that the dc's are not looking after them, all responsibility passes to your dh. If he shows any sign of not looking after them, then he has to re-home them and explain it to your dcs.

Presumably you made your original decision clear to your dh as well as your dcs.

I would be cutting his nads off if he was my dh.

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 19/01/2009 17:47

lol littlefish. I think nads fry up quite nicely with baby guinea pig and a hint of garlic. Honestly, I am soooo mad with DH.

Ruby - I am sure I will eventually, but its the principle of me clearly saying no and him doing it anyway which has made me fuuurious!

oops

I did exactly this with my dh (only rabbits not guinea pigs) - just fell in love with a pair - so I can understand his actions. My dh was not particualry happy but he has now fallen in love with them .....

YANBU but people are fallible ...

LightShines - how are the little Gp's settling in? Have you fallen for them yet??

I was looking for another thread on GPs and found this one... we are wanting to get a couple if you need yours re-homed??

[BTW you were NOT being unreasonable - you have to be a united team of parents!!]

cheshirekitty · 08/02/2009 14:49

This happened to me, but with chickens.

Sorry to say I ended up looking after them.

YANBU.

sayithowitis · 08/02/2009 16:17

Guinea pigs are gorgeous! They are not so small as to be like mice but not as big as rabbits.Ours 'talk' to us and are real characters. I bet you have fallen in love with them! Anyway, no, YANBU to be unhappy that you were undermined, BUT YWBU not to allow your kids the opportunity to show they can be responsible. Our first gps were a birthday pressie to DS on his 6th b'day. He did not let us down and apart from a little help cleaning hutch, always took full responsibility. We are on 2nd lot of gps now, and ds2 is old enough to do all looking after and pays all costs from his Saturday job. Holidaysare not a problem for us as we have a great neighbour who comes to feed them and be surrogate parents when we are away.

NAB09 · 08/02/2009 16:51

YANBU but under no circumstances must you start looking after them.

DH leaves the animal decisions to me

mamanurse · 18/03/2009 01:50

You will fall in love with them even though right now you are upset that the daddy over rid your protests of no no no....
my girls got 2 for christmas and i was livid because i knew in the end who was gonna be stuck taking care of them.. and sure enough like clock work, mom is the one falling in love with them running to the pet store to buy them stuff and making sure they get what they need. however, i still make the kids let them out and play with them and clean the cage. yet you will see they will soon become part of the family
