limelovley · 18/01/2009 21:27

I have read that I could claim JSA as it is not mean's tested. Opinions please, should I claim - no-one is likely to hire a women in their third trimester are they?

thought that was for those actively looking for work?

SlightlyMadScientist · 18/01/2009 21:28

If you are actively looking for work then you have the right to apply surely?

AnarchyAunt · 18/01/2009 21:29

It is means tested iirc?

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 18/01/2009 21:29

I think you can only get it before 28 weeks after that you get Income Support instead.

Though it has been a while since I claimed the rules may have changed.

SlightlyMadScientist · 18/01/2009 21:29

x posts...it is - but as long as OP is actively looking for work then she would be entitled.

Whether anyone would employ her is a different issue.

Lauriefairycake · 18/01/2009 21:29

You would get contribution based for 6 months if you have worked.

It is means tested otherwise if you live with someone.

scrooged · 18/01/2009 21:30

I think you'll not be eligable as you need to be availiable for work with JSA. Income support sounds more like what you need. The amount will reduce after the birth as you'll be able to claim child tax credit. The job centre will be able to help you.

EldonAve · 18/01/2009 21:30

there are 2 versions - one is based on your household income and one on your NI contributions

I did not say I wasn't looking for work.

Only if you are looking for work. Have you looked at other benefits you may be entitled to if you aren't looking for work?

littleboyblue · 18/01/2009 21:32

I was claiming for a while through pregnancy.
Just because you probably won't get employed doesn't mean that you cannot look for a job on the off chance, and if you are actively seeking work, you are entitled to payment.

I am married. I know that I am not entitled to any other benefits. According to a leaflet my M/W gave me, it is not means tested even if you are in a partnership but does depend on your NI contributions.

limelovley · 18/01/2009 21:34

sleepycat - How do you know that?

OP posts:
littleboyblue · 18/01/2009 21:34

You wouldn't be entitled to income support just because you're pregnant though would you? I wasn't. I claimed JSA on NI contributions, but after 6 months, was told I didn't qualify for anything apart from maybe sure start maternity grant, but still waiting to hear on that

honeybehappy · 18/01/2009 21:35

I got the sack shortly after i found out i was pregnant with dd1, i had to claim JSA till i was 33 weeks. I used to waddle in and i had a lovely lady every 2 weeks and she would get me a glass of water and always see me first.

She said it was pointless as no one would employ me but it was the rules.

limelovley · 18/01/2009 21:37

honeybehappy

What happened at 33 weeks?

chegirl · 18/01/2009 21:38

I would go an ask at your local JC or give the a ring.

If your OH is working you will still be able to get contribution based for 6 mths. If you have paid your taxes and need the money why shouldnt you claim? You will have to prove you are looking for work by doing job searches etc.

If you are not able to get JSA and you OH works you should get extra tax credits etc.

If you dont have an OH you should be able to get Income support.

Lauriefairycake · 18/01/2009 21:38

Yes, it is not means tested for six months providing you have paid enough NI contributions.

At the end of six months it is then definitely means tested on household income.

And then you will get child tax credit instead.

tankie · 18/01/2009 21:39

You've paid your tax, and you need the money - that's what benefits are for. Go for it.

Northernlurker · 18/01/2009 21:39

Can you clarify your situation please?

My current understanding is that you are living with someone who is in work. You are not in work, nor have you been looking for work but you ae now wondering if you should 'pretend' to be looking for work in order to claim jsa safe in the knowledge that you can attend interviews as nobody will want to employ a hugely pregant woman.

If that is the case then yes YABU. Hugely so in fact.

If though you are looking for work and would work if a job was offered then yes morally and legally you should claim jsa if you can.

honeybehappy · 18/01/2009 21:40

I had to claim income support which i did till i was 40 weeks coz i moved in with DP

Northernlurker

My husband works. I am not employed and I have not been looking for work but am willing to do so and I would accept one if offered to me.
