Hmm, dd would probably not eat this and would go hungry but on teh other hand it might encourage her to eat it too.

horsemadgal · 15/01/2009 18:41

I would, tomato brings me out in heatspots.

saint2shoes · 15/01/2009 18:41

Odd fruit to choose, I couldn't eat it as it makes my teeth hurt.

loobeylou · 15/01/2009 18:43

I'm not sure the school get to choose what they have on any given day, as it comes free for KS 1 if thats what you mean. At our school there is always yesterdays left overs for kids to pick if they don't like that days option. But I think it is a good idea, as many kids who will give the "I don't like that"line at home so you give up, WILL at that age try something new if they see all their friends eating it.

naturalbornmum · 15/01/2009 19:18

I think it is a good thing that there is only 1 fruit a day, it encourages DC to try new things. Its not the school's problem if DD does'nt eat breakfast. I think you will look a bit precious by mentioning this.

PuppyMonkey · 15/01/2009 19:19

Yuck, I have a pathological FEAR of tomatoes.

Bring your own fruit?

Are they not allowed to take their own fruit ?

ByTheSea · 15/01/2009 19:23

DD2-6 would love this and just about any other raw veg you put in front of her. I don't see a problem -- all my DC love tomatoes (and carrots).

NorbertDentressangle · 15/01/2009 19:24

I think you just need to encourage her to get her fruit from her bag on tomato days.

I'm sure there must be at least one child a day who doesn't like whatever the offered fruit is so maybe the teacher needs to remind them that they can get their own fruit from their bag if thats the case.

In my DS's case it would be the orange/satsuma day -ever since he had a bad experience with an orange pip that resulted in him coughing and spluttering he won't touch them.

littlerach · 15/01/2009 19:25

dd1 used to get whole normal tomatoes, she loved them.

they also get whole raw carrots.

NAB3lovelychildren · 15/01/2009 19:26

She needs to learn to do what the teacher says and eat her own fruit.

it's a piece of tomato

not soemthing bizarre and unheard of

agree with Mutt

your child does not like tomato

meh...........

ladyjuliafish · 15/01/2009 19:30

lots of people like tomatoes. My dd doesn't like bananas but I wouldn't think anyone who offered her one was a loony.

melpomene · 15/01/2009 19:32

Tomatoes are possibly not the best choice; messy and likely to stain white shirts.

My dd1's class got whole raw carrots one morning when I was a parent helper; they were large carrots which still had the ends on and haven't been peeled . They were left untouched because there was an alternative (bananas).

Sadly my dd1 won't eat fruit of any description, so she always just sits and sips her water while everyone else tucks in

Dillydaydreamer · 15/01/2009 19:37

Yes YABU because in the class situation it is important that there is only one option unless there is an allergy i.e. good reason to not eat it.
I have a new mindee who started on monday. His mum said he doesn't eat peas, strawberries, sweetcorn.... he has had all of these at my house and has eaten them when I said a biscuit would follow Children go through fads of what they do and don't like, if parents pander to it they end up just eating crap. With most things if you give it often they get used to it.

mrsmaidamess · 15/01/2009 19:38

I really wouldn't mention the fact that your daughter doesn't like tomatoes. It makes it sound as if you are expecting the routine to be changed to suit your child.

You could speak to her teacher to encourage her to get your dd to get her own fruit out, but not the Head.

naturalbornmum · 15/01/2009 19:38

mel

What is wrong with unpeeled carrots with the ends on? DD has these at school. No wonder so many DC are fusspots!

hullygully · 15/01/2009 19:41

If the carrots are unpeeled and nonorganic she may as well drink petrol and be done with it.

skramblenotdieting · 15/01/2009 19:41

Keep your nose out and let them get the kids experimenting

Can you not provide a snack for break time, I take it this is an in class snack time, sounds like it is part of educating them about healthy choices and all that.

cupofteaplease · 15/01/2009 19:41

I think YABU.

  1. It is only offered one day out of 5.
  2. She is allowed to eat her own fruit brought from home but chooses not to.
  3. She will not starve by not eating between breakfast and lunch.

I would not even think to mention it ot the Head.
