To be furious at Tesco?

We bought DS1 a new bedside table in December. It was flatpack from Tesco Direct. When we tried to put it together we realised we didn't have the correct drawer sides - they were all left hand sides.
I emailed them asking for them to send us two right hand drawer sides but they won't send them. The only way to get hold of them is to buy a whole new bedside table and then subsequently claim a refund.
I'm bloody furious that I am expected to shell out again up front and have questioned this several times but am told it's the only way.
Has anyone else had this?

You should be able to get a refund on the original - surely? And then choose whether to get another.

CantSleepWontSleep · 15/01/2009 09:34

Agree with hb - take it back as faulty and then buy another.

savoycabbage · 15/01/2009 09:35

That can't be right! They can't sell you something that is not fit for purpose! What if you couldn't afford to buy another one. YANBU.

Not personally but I stood behind a couple at customer services once in our local Tesco who'd bought a laptop which subsequently proved faulty.
They'd brought it back for an exchange - not a refund - but the goon assistant did something wrong on the computer and ended up charging them for the replacement as well. The computer wouldn't allow her to cancel this mistake so this poor couple had to pay twice for the laptop and wait (I think goon assistant said about 4-5 days) for the money to be put back on their card.
I was angry for them!!

we had a faulty garden set from them. Got the same ridiculous answer

we sent the original back for a full refund first and then decided if this was the way the treated customers we didnt want another

VinegarTits · 15/01/2009 09:41

I can understand why they wouldnt just send 2 right sides, they are probably all boxed up in flat packs so they would have to remove from 2 other packs that would then become obsolete and un-sellable

You should have just return them and got a refund, them ordered some more (or not, i would have then shopped else where)

YANBU to be annoyed at their mistake in the packing of their product, but YABU to expect them to send you 2 rights sides

I hate Tescos. Amercian shitheads.

Are Tesco's American now - jeepers another reason to avoid shopping in their hell-hole behemoth stores. Thank god I am lucky enough to live in a town with a great market!

We had this, we bought dd1 a games table it arrived damaged and when I called they charged me again, I questioned whether I would be charged delivery twice but they said no, I think it is simply that it is cheaper for them to send the whole new box than pay somebody to go and find the right box rip it open and send the bit you need, in fact we still have the partially damaged games table as well as the replacement. If you do it over the phone or in store they will process the new payment and refund at the same time. HTH.

ps does anyone want a partially damaged games table? Free to good home.

Tesco Direct is governed by the Distance Selling Regulations. They CANNOT refuse you the right to cancel the order, especially as in case they have provided you with faulty good. As the goods are faulty - THEY have to pay to collect them, and they must refund your money asap, or within 30 days at the latest.

Even if the goods are perfect, you have a cooling off period of 7 days in which to cancel the order - only a few items are exempt from this, furniture (unless custom made) is NOT.

Get back in contact with them and tell them they are breaking the law and if they don't replace the item asap you will be complaining to the Office of Fair Trading.

Yes we could take it back and get a refund - but they have said we would have to dismantle it. It took a couple of hours to build so we don't want to do that when all we are lacking is a couple of parts
We can take the missing parts from the second bedside table which would be much quicker from our point of view.
But I object to shelling out. It's £69. What if it had been a new bed or something?
Clueless, I was told the refund would take 3-5 days after buying the new one.
Vinegartits, whatever happens they will be left with an unsellable unit as if we return ours it will be incomplete.

I would just dismantle the thing, get a refund and shop elsewhere tbh

No point in arguing with them as you are unlikely to win, could become obsessive about it and cause yourself a lot of stress

Write a letter of complaint about the poor service you have recieved, and the incovenience it has caused you (i.e, manhours putting it together and dismantling it), and tell them you wont be shopping there again.
