To think that the creche workers might have stopped my 14 mth old eating sand?

Or am i being too fussy?
I left my children in the local childrens centre creche for a couple of hours whilst i was on a course, went back to find my DS covered in sand to be told "oh he,s eaten loads of it this morning..."
Am i being unreasonable to think they might have stopped him and distracted him with something else?

they may have tried distracting him once it happened

tbh many children eat sand. mud etc

its part of growing up

how old is ds?

laweaselmys · 14/01/2009 13:56

They're just being honest. Children do stuff like this, and you're not going to catch them every single time they try to do it. (I bet you don't!) it's not really fair to stop him playing with something he's enjoying just because he's eaten a bit of sand either - at 14mths he wouldn't really understand why.

Lilybeto · 14/01/2009 13:58

My charge/mindee ate a half a sandcastle bucket of woodlice before. Her older sister was devastated as she had been collecting them all morning. Don't worry about sand, it gets worse than that!

Bonnycat · 14/01/2009 13:59

DS is 14 months old.I know kids eat alsorts but it was the " loads of it " that i was about.
He was very constipated and uncomfortable afterwards.

wait till you change his nappy. It'll be all gritty.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 14/01/2009 14:00

best is when they eat glitter

OrmIrian · 14/01/2009 14:01

You are being a little fussy. Only way to stop it is not to let him play with it. Which would be a shame don't you think?

CrackopentheBaileys · 14/01/2009 14:02

probably just a figure of speech, or them being lighthearted. Sounds like something I might say to a parent but they know me well enough to know I don't actually mean loads I guess...

rubyslippers · 14/01/2009 14:03

YABU

babies and toddlers eat EVERYTHING at this age

I partially ate a book when i was little

"loads of it" is just a turn of phrase i think

laweaselmys · 14/01/2009 14:03

I'm pretty sure that when they said 'loads of it' they didn't mean buckets full. A couple of handfuls maybe.

spicemonster · 14/01/2009 14:06

So if he was constipated afterwards, did this happen a while ago? Was his nappy full of sand? I think YAB a bit U although I can understand how the word 'loads' might have alarmed you.

I was pissed off when my nursery let my DS eat a piece of chalk but a) he was about 9 months and b) he could have choked on it. Oh and c) they didn't tell me and he had blue poo!

He has now eaten all manner of revolting things.

oops - wasn't that exciting a post!

womblingfree · 14/01/2009 21:18

Possibly - at least you didn't have to deal with the situation a friend of a friend of mine found herself in. Her 18 month DD managed to consume a 6 inch length of tinsel at nursery. No-one realised until her mum went to change her nappy that night and went to pull what she thought was a bit of fluff off her bum and kept pulling and pulling and pulling....

saint2shoes · 14/01/2009 21:21

yikes

piscesmoon · 14/01/2009 21:38

It is better to play with it and eat it than not play with it. I think the tinsel would have given alarm!

mumeeee · 14/01/2009 22:54

YABUand a bit to fussy. Toddlers of this age eat all sorts of stuff. He probably didn't eat loads.

cass66 · 15/01/2009 10:58

dd2 ate most of Bondi Beach when she was 14months. came to no harm. I found it made her looser rather than constipated.

I exaggerate, of course. Bondi still has lots of sand left!!

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 15/01/2009 17:18

oh yes, I remember sandy nappies

You wait until his first slug or snail!

ScottishMummy · 15/01/2009 17:24

bonny it happens so quickly, but fortunately no harm done.just gritty nappy

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/01/2009 21:07

sandy nappies - they are awful

sand gets everywhere

also sand doesnt taste nice - remember picnics on beach as child, gritty sandwiches < yuk>

sure your child didnt eat that much of it
