to put an 18 month old in a highchair

We've just had a sitdown lunch with lots of extended family members. We didn't have enough chairs. So DH sat on a chair that is in danger of falling to bits (so not normally used) and I sat on a box.

We were still a chair short so we pulled out DD's old highchair and asked SiL to put her son (who is 18 months) in it. The highchair is the sort where you can remove the tray and sit up to the table so he was in no way being excluded/forced to sit away from the table or anything like that.

SiL was not happy and complained that her son was way too old to sit in a highchair, he hadn't sat in one for ages, he always sat on a normal chair at home and he absolutely hated going into highchairs. She suggested that we should put DD (who is 3 in a couple of weeks and was the next youngest child) in the highchair.

I was all for putting DD in said highchair to keep the peace (though she would have complained too) but DH tells SiL in a polite but firm voice that DD really was too old for the highchair and could she please put her son in it. SiL puts her son in the chair whilst complaining. Son sits in the highchair and eats his meal happily. Sil continues to complain throughout the meal.

So were we (or DH really) being unreasonable to ask SiL to put her son in the highchair?

sil sounds a pita imo

for one meal would it have killed her son?

i normally use booster seats at 12mth+ at the table, but you use what is avaible

i blame the hostess is not maing sure you all had seats suitable for your ages

Your sil sounds as mad as a snake! My dd3 is 20 months and will be in a highchair for as long as I can get away with!

Sounds like a PITA and YANBU

DD1 is 6 and still sits in her Tripp Trapp (that was the whole point of buying it ...) and DD2 who is 2.5 sits in a booster chair but would love a Tripp Trapp, I'm just at the price of them on ebay. But if we are out, DD2 ALWAYS sits in a highchair otherwise she is all over the place ... the excitement of all those other people she can try to bother charm.

When there is an adult sitting on a box, it seems very rude to complain about an 18mo in a high chair! What a cow!

My DS is 4.5 and still uses his highchair - it's literally just that, a HIGH chair so he can see what's on his plate !!

Last Easter - so DS approaching 4 (he's small but not tiny) - we went to Pizza Hut for the lunchtime buffet. Misbehaving DS was threatened with a high chair (complete with tray) if he didn't sit nicely with us and we did end up plonking him in highchair - very pleasantly surprised at the end of the meal to not be charged for his dinner as toddlers in high chairs are free and he'd probably scoffed half a medium pizza plus ice-cream !!

DD1 is 4 and still sits in her Tchibo chair and ds1 (5.11) hops in one if the dts aren't about as he can draw and write much better from higher up so no YANBU.
