£115 hair disappointment, wwyc?

MrsSeanBean · 12/01/2009 22:09

I went to the hairdresser today for a full head of highlights to lift the colour of previosly coloured brown hair. I am a natural mouse colour who is usually blonde, but a couple of months ago decided to go dark for easier maintenance. Having decided it just didn't suit me, I booked in for full head of blonde highlights to take me back to blonde, or at anyrate not so dark.£115 later I am really disappointed, the highlights seem very fine and almost indiscernable. I did not expect to be totally blonde again in one go, but did expect to see more of a difference. I am not a natural complainer and have never complained to a hairdresser before, but I do feel a bit 'short changed' and that I should see more of a result for that money ( and 3.5 hours there). Would you complain? If so, what redress should I reasonably expect? Or should I put up and make the best of it?be gentle with me, feel skint and miserable

Go back and ask, I'm sure they will re-do things for you.

When I had my hair highlighted just before Christmas the girl was worried it wasn't light enough (I get a golden honey blonde) and she said go home, think about it and come back if you want it lighter I'll fix it.

Really, don't be shy, go back and politely say 'this wasn't the colour I wanted' you have nothing to lose.

claw3 · 12/01/2009 22:54

LOL @ innocentbystander and the number 4 oooh lovely, thank you.

Just before christmas i was going to a works do, so decided to have my hair done, eyebrows waxed and false eyelashes (my friend had some done and they looked very natural)

They cut my hair too short, my eyelashes looked liked a pantomime dame's and the beauty therapist asked me whether i would like the hair on my lip done too! shock, horror what bloody hair, you mean i have a tashe, i havent, but didnt like to say no and to top it all off, a few days later i received a parking fine for overstaying in the free car park.

and what did i say, i said thank you

zenandtheartofbaking · 12/01/2009 22:57

Btw ...

I feel real sympathy for you. It's so great when you come out of the hairdresser's and your hair really is everything you had hoped for.

And it is just awful when it doesn't happen like that.

Going back and complaining is horrible too but I do think it's worth doing.

MrsSeanBean · 12/01/2009 23:02

Oh claw, how annoying
I am not sure whether to approach the stylist who did the job, or ask for the salon owner, who I have never spoken to. The girl who did my hair is lovely and I would feel more comfortable talking to her, but maybe she doesn't have the authority to rectify? Oh dear, I wish I could take one of you lovely MNers for moral support.

I agree that for that kind of money you need to be happy.
Also agree that you shoudl use the "it looks different in daylight" excuse, but no need to be apologetic about it.
Perhaps call before you go in and explain so that they are prepared for you, might make it easier all round?

curlygal · 12/01/2009 23:03

Definitely go back and complain, or if you would find it easier phone them first to explain.

I have brown hair and dye my greys (usually at home with nice'n'easy as am a nice'n'easy girl) on one of the few occassions I splashed out to get my greys done at the posh hairdressers I specifically said I wanted my greys covered and for it to look natural and choose light brown only to end up like Mortica Adams.

It was a bit nerve wracking complainging and they did argue that I choose the colour etc, but I stood my ground and they agreed to lighten it up a bit.

For £115 I think they should offer to re do them for you.

Claw - poor you that is hardly a pampering experience you will wish to repeat!

MrsSeanBean · 12/01/2009 23:04

Zen, thank you for the sympathy it is indeed very annoying to pay dearly and still feel depressed!

Mrsseanbean - We are rubbish at complaining in this Country, all too polite!

You wouldnt want to take me with you, I even say sorry to the person who bumped into me whilst pushing in front of me in the queue at the supermarket he he!

lucykate · 12/01/2009 23:17

go back and (politely) complain, £115 is a huge amount of money to have paid out for something you are not happy with. i had an awful haircut years ago, and went in the next day and complained, i didn't feel up to doing so at the time, but cried when i got home and realised the full extent of the damage. it was an inch shorter on one side than the other, and the layers were all wonky. my mum persuaded me to go back and complain.

BlackEyedDogstar · 12/01/2009 23:23

If they said 'Best we can do is break up the brown a bit. That'll be £115, love.' then you you don't have much argument.

But you didn't did you? You wanted blond so blond you should be. They need to redo it, and get it blond.

That said I once came out of the hairdressers with a GINGER MULLET and whispering, 'oh thank you, yes. Yes, it's smashing.' Took an entire 3 months to normalise.

mistressmable · 12/01/2009 23:49

I would complain but I am not sure if it will get you anywhere - hairdressers often interprut (sp) what the customer wants - I have often been disappointed in the past.

I can not believe you paid £115!!!!!!!
I pay less than £40 for a cut and full head of hairlights.

debzmb62 · 13/01/2009 00:49

i,d 100% go back and just say your not happy with the results £150 and you not happy come on its your money you should get what you want !!

debzmb62 · 13/01/2009 00:51

soory £115 ( debbie must read post properly )

TheYearOfTheCat · 13/01/2009 10:23

LOL at Blackeyeddogstar and her ginger mullet!

piratecat · 13/01/2009 11:14

have you rung yet?

MorrisZapp · 13/01/2009 16:18

I've got mousey hair and I get it highlighted back to it's real colour (blonde, har har) every few months. It makes no difference how lnng my roots are or even if I'm doing it from scratch - I still get a lovely head of blonde highlights.

I've never heard of having to go blonde gradually???

I want to be blonde today please, and for £115 I think that is a very reasonable request.

jujumaman · 13/01/2009 16:25

Ring up and politely complain

I had highlights done recently and hairdresser himself told me they weren't good enough and asked me to come back and he'd redo them. Which I did. Anyone charging that much should do the same for you. I'm sure this lot will.

MrsSeanBean · 13/01/2009 19:31

Thanks so much to everyone who posted here.

Spurred on by you lovely MNers, I called the salon first thing this morning and they fitted me in for an early afternoon appt. I had the highlights redone (for free!) There was no fuss or quibbling whatsoever and I am now actually blonde again as well (not quite as light as before, but they reckon I need to build up gradually so as not to wreck the condition of my hair.)

I'm really pleased. Just goes to show what a bit of polite complaining can do.

Fantastic result

NAB3lovelychildren · 14/01/2009 07:46

That is great and I am sure you will get steller sefvice from now on.

About 3 years ago I paid £57 for a cut and colur and while i loved the cut I wasn't happy with the colour but found the stylist very sure of herself and wouldn't go back there for anything.

MrsSeanBean · 14/01/2009 12:09

Stylists/ salons that act all superior don't do themselves any favours do they?

I left a salon a year or so ago as the stylist was unforgiveably rude and took the approach that she would tell me what to do with my hair!

By contrast, I am likely to be a loyal customer of the other salon simply because they accepted I was unhappy and put it right.
