To put the heating on constant and not give a feck about the bill..........

for now (and prepare myself for a heart attack when the next bill comes in)!

I am fed up of the house feeling like a fridge within 30 mins of the heating going off. We have double glazing and live in a relatively new house but it is blardy cold.

I have had it on a timer but am now going to leave it on unless we get too hot (oh what a feeling that will be!).

Our last bill for only 6 weeks of gas and electric was 310 quid!! and that was with the heating on for only 5 hours a day and hot water for 3.

DD has told me that the car is warmer than the house so will keep it on and worry about the bills later (hoping to win the lottery before I get it!!)

WE used to have the heating come on at mignight for an hour as it was so cold that dd2 used to wake up.

MarmadukeScarlet · 11/01/2009 13:26

Clarissimo, do you have a door curtain or could you get some draught excluder tape? It is cheaper (generally imho) to try and stop the cold getting in/heat getting out than to just keep heating a 'leaky' space.

Clarissimo · 11/01/2009 13:35

We have a draught excluder at the base, but no door curtain atm, however the windows etc are so vry leaky indeed that's there is very much a minimum we can do (rented house).

I do also have a dh on nights who comes in before I wake so he likes the house above freezing when he gets home; its on 15 atm which seems to work for us.

I ill talk to DH about a door curtain- if it can be done then its a good idea.

MarmadukeScarlet · 11/01/2009 13:42

I wasn't meaning to be picky, but we live in a cold draughly place and it is miserable - we do, however, own it and have no got permission to change the windows - yippee. I hope they make a huge difference (DG) as next yr, once the wiindows are paid for, we will have less money for heating!

The door curtain by our back door makes a huge diff, like you much open plan and double height space. Changing the cat flap made the most diff, for 2 yrs everytime the wind blew it just flapped open letting in wind, rain, snow - you name it. But 1 magnetic cat flap later - much cosier.

We have a curtain and a secondary door for the front door, makes so much diff.

I hope you can make life a bit warmer it must be miserable for you, eons ago, when DD was born we lived in a proper house with cavity wall insulation, DG and proper heating and that was chilly enough to do night feeds in.

Clarissimo · 11/01/2009 13:56

Oh i didnt take it as picky LOL.

Good idea about the curtain, we also have high height space (it is 2 old tiny mill cottages knocked together). It shoulnt be open plan but doors between kitchen / living room / corridor to front door will not close as the internet cable and stairgates block them atm.

ortunately i am reatively cold tolerant- camping probably lol- and was doing the school run in a t shirt up to Christmas; boys never seem to get ill either (no bugs since they started school- ds1 is 9!) so am certain its great for the immune system! .

tbh biggest worry isnt cold (except from ventilation bricj but with gas thats unavoidble, just a shame its where baby plays) or even cost, ust think its a sheer pity to know all the fuel is being burned to only vapourise.

We are eliginble for free insulation (sn kiddies) so need to get dh onto that.

MarmadukeScarlet · 11/01/2009 14:09

OOHH, tell me more about the free insulation? Have never heard of this - I too have a DS with SN. Although there is a prickling at the back of my brain saying I have been told/read a link on here before...grey cells are not what they used to be.

I cannot help but think of you as your old name, as my nickname when a teen was 'peachy'.

Clarissimo · 11/01/2009 14:13

ah i am still a peachy in rl you now!

Clarissimo · 11/01/2009 14:15

here

dla for a child does qualify you, a few people have been told otherwise but taht was duff info

MarmadukeScarlet · 11/01/2009 14:16

I don't really go on the SN board here or anywhere, heard of TTR when the M**ldie stuff was being discussed (a M was saying it was just like being a member of that exclusive group ttr, I seem to think they got roundly snurked at)

I will off their now and look. Thank you.

Clarissimo · 11/01/2009 14:16

Hang on, eligibility on there hs changed. hmm will look into it- still worth a look though

Clarissimo · 11/01/2009 14:20

TTR is worth a go, very friendly bunch IME and less 'public'

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/01/2009 14:27

put ours on when i got up this morning

dud turn it off about an hour ago, and house is so coldnow, that i have put it back on

think out bill will be much higher then our direct debit, but at the moment i dont care

least we have carpet, couldnt buy a house with laminated floors

bloodycold - could you buy a cheap big rug and lay on floor in living room to try and keep room warmer?

GreenGables · 11/01/2009 14:43

NoMarmaduke, I don't think it is very well lagged. Also the pipes all run under the floorboards in their room so their floor is always nice and warm, although by the morning everything is freezing. I shall be paying great attention to the expert tomorrow. I have always wondered whether it would cost less to constantly heat the house at a low temp.

...I to have one of those plastic ventilation bricks in my livingroom.

GreenGables · 11/01/2009 14:43

I meant too obviously

MarmadukeScarlet · 11/01/2009 14:50

I think she will be the first webchat guest EVERYONE is pleased to see!

Alibear1 · 11/01/2009 18:02

Ours is on all night at the moment, we just turn it down a few degrees. I honestly think it might be more efficient this way though because it's not working so hard to heat the house up from cold each morning. BFing at night without heating is not an option at the moment!

shawad · 12/01/2009 15:19

Leaving the heating on 24h (but room thermostat set at a reasonable temp, having TRVs on all rads) probably won't cost much more than having to heat a house from near freezing temperatures for a couple of hours in the morning and evening.

When DS1 was born last December, I turned the heating on constant, and kept the house at 21'C until the end of March. The bill for that Quarter turned out to be about a tenner more than it was the same period the previous year, when we had the heating on 2hrs in the morning and 4-5 in the evening.

This year, I'm doing the same.

dustyteddy · 12/01/2009 15:26

yanbu! We have our heating on full time. Sod the bloody bill..I'm cold, brrrr

thumbwitch · 12/01/2009 15:27

I did the same. Of course, the boiler had other ideas. So we have had electric heating on entirely too much to compensate for sfa on the gas CH front - am expecting giNORMOUS bill whenever it comes in
