To think that in 2009, at -2 degrees, girls shouldn't have to ear a skirt?

I ahve boys and they were cold enough today.

So I felt really sorry for the girls in their regulation pinafores (infants) and skirts (juniors).

I wouldn't choose to wear a skirt in this weather s it seems sillt to make the children.

They have joging suits they can wear for PE days / school trips, just seems sensible to me that they should be allowed to wear them on really cold days also?

We're in wales, this weather is predictable after all.

OFSTED pulled ours chool up for a lack of heating in some rooms at our last review, and to my knwledge no extra has been fitted so doubly important. There's also a lack of heating at lunch time (dining room so full they have to keep doors open) so even more important.

AIBU? Is it worth raising wioth Head as an idea?

Then there is DS who refuses to wear hat/gloves or fasten his coat. And at nearly 8 I think he should be able to work out whether he is cold or not.

bozza · 06/01/2009 11:51

Girls school trousers do tend to be a bit cheap and nasty looking and to have bling on them like a little diamante heart or something. Not keen on that look but the school were encouraging trousers as being better for playing out so I did buy DD one pair. Can't imagine that a pleated skirt is going to inhibit her playing out in anyway, mind you.

bozza · 06/01/2009 11:51

These are DD's Mary Janes chosen for being more robust than lots of others.

islandofsodor · 06/01/2009 11:56

Dd in her regulation pinafore and nice warm grey tights is actually warmer today than ds in his trousers and knee length socks.

I actually feel sorry for boys who can;t wear tights as the wind blows up trouser legs.

bozza · 06/01/2009 11:58

I start to feel less sorry for them though when they come out of school trailing their coat behind them through the snow. Or is that just my DS?

BonsoirAnna · 06/01/2009 11:58

bozza - grey woolly tights and a pleated skirt sounds much more chic than cheap trousers and white socks . I know what you mean about girls trousers and bling - I ended up paying a fortune for a pair of totally plain very dark navy corduroy jeans and a totally plain matching wool cardigan.

Niecie · 06/01/2009 12:04

Trousers were never an option when I was at school and I don't remember cold being a problem. We wore extra socks and wellies on snowy days and carried our shoes in a bag.

Cold weather doesn't stop me wearing a skirt - thick tights and a long skirt are just as warm as trousers, if not warmer cos you have the layers.

That said, if girls want to wear trousers to school they should be allowed. However, our school has banned black trousers as the girls were wearing unsuitable 'fashion' trousers rather than sensible school ones. Now they have the wear regulation grey.

hippipotami · 06/01/2009 16:05

Sorry Anna, have been out all day. Yes they have a bench in teh cloak room under wich they store their pe kit, spare boots etc.
Also, each class has a welly boots bucket and the children are encouraged to slip into wellies before headign out to play

nappyaddict · 06/01/2009 16:08

A skirt and thick woolly tights is warmer than a pair of school trousers imo.

LazyLinePainterJane · 06/01/2009 16:12

Does she complain of being cold? DS's school is shorts only for boys all year round. It seems awful but it's not the children who are complaining!

[and had driven[

Linnet · 06/01/2009 17:58

Im in Scotland and my dd went to school yesterday with her wooly tights under her school trousers.

nappyaddict · 06/01/2009 22:47

I feel sorry for the boys. People should send them to school in tights under trousers too but I guess most wouldn't.

devilisunaccomplishedinprada · 07/01/2009 00:11

YANBU. My dd absolutely refuses to wear skirts anyway so has always worn trousers. Luckily it's quite common in her school. Even if it wasn't I would still put them on her especially in this weather. I didn't think they were allowed to refuse girls wearing trousers these days anyway.

stitch · 07/01/2009 00:16

i wish i had this problem of skirts.
today ds1 was driven to school by myself. he had missed the bus, and di had to take him in, was very annoye d about this. it was minus seven at the time, so i insisted he wear his coat and a vest, but he wouldnt wear a jump;er or scarf or hat or gloves. .... i reminded hinm to dress properly when getting bus back
at six in the evening, he knocks on th e front door, standing ther in his blazer. no coat, no jumper. wtf? he said it wasnt cold when he left school
wtf is wrong with this child? at seven in the evening it was minus four. so at six it would have been at least below zero. i know the high today was zero. so why doenst he freel col?

Ashantai · 07/01/2009 00:21

LazyLinePainterJane, our local catholic primary also has boys in shorts till they are in year 6!

I cringe for them but kids never seem to feel the cold anyway! Here's me cosied up to the max with 2 scarves, a woolly hat, a long coat and 2 pairs of gloves still freezing, and my 5 yr old gets the hump if i even try to zip his coat up!

nooka · 07/01/2009 00:42

Well it was about -2C here, and I sent the children to school in warm trousers, tops and hoodies, snow trousers, snowboots, ski gloves, scarves and warm hats. Granted it was snowing, and they did spend playtime building snow forts, and after school having a snowball fight . Spending the last nine months in countries with no uniform codes has made me feel more and more that they are really unnecessary (and I was quite pro sensible uniforms - that is ones with trousers for girls, no ties and no buttons - before that).

nooka · 07/01/2009 00:56

On the other hand the kids wore the same clothes to school a couple of weeks ago when it was -25C. I imagine in the UK schools would be closed at that temperature!
