to think that party bags for a 1 year old's party is a pointless waste of time and money?

I mean, FFS, time enough to be plagued by the world of party bags when they are old enough to care. I'm also amazed by what some people are doing. A party for a dozen or so babies? Visits to soft play areas? Their DC is one. DD (one on Sat) is getting a birthday cake and her nearest and dearest fighting over who plays with her. That's it.

AIBU or am I a supremely mean mummy?

Their baby their rules so beak out

Littlefish · 05/01/2009 21:25

Party bags are a pointless waste of time at any age.

Join the revolution...

Down with party bags!

ThingOne · 05/01/2009 21:26

Of course they are a waste of time at one. And two. Parties are for parents and older siblings at this age.

LuckySalem · 05/01/2009 21:26

Its upto them. We're only having a few people over for DDs party on 16th... mostly family but a couple of friends for her to play with.

We've got party bags but all we're putting in them is the cake!! lol

oliviasmama · 05/01/2009 21:33

I did party bags for DD's 1st Birthday party last year, it was a big bash with about 50 of us, (ages of children ranged from 1 to 9)....don't know whether to bother again, seems that a piece of cake and a balloon would do, although I tend to think along the lines of RRunner, everyone to their own and nobody elses business

Littlefish · 05/01/2009 21:35

I never do partybags. I give a balloon and a piece of cake. Party bags get filled with tat which is played with and broken in the car on the way home. A complete waste of money and resources in my opinion.

My party bags were clearly high quality then littlefish....and a waste of money ....definately wont bother again!

makemineagecko · 05/01/2009 22:00

Dd2's first birthday party was great- we hired a music franchise to come and do a session in our garden. Party bags had a buggy book, a rubber duck and some cake, if I remember. Was a lovely, lovely day! I'm not asking anyone else to do the same, and I didn't throw a party for dd1's first or second birthdays either due to circumstances, so I really enjoyed organising it!

YABU to say that they are a waste of money if somebody else has done party bags- it is up to you if you provide them.

YANBU about the plastic tat- I just don't put tat in their party bags!

EyeballsintheSky · 05/01/2009 22:02

LOL OK, I'll beak out!

My brother coined the name "B*gger-off bags" I think they are great because they signal to the children (and parents)that the party is finished and it is time to BO

oliviasmama · 05/01/2009 22:07

LOL at bugger off bags.....perhaps I'll continue to do them

piscesmoon · 05/01/2009 22:08

You are a very sensible mummy-do not give into it!

piscesmoon · 05/01/2009 22:10

Mine didn't have a party at one-they had a small family tea party-it is supposed to be for them-not oneupmanship.

LynetteScavo · 05/01/2009 22:15

I agree with choccyp1g - they are the perfect way to hint every one should go home.

Crappy party bags are a waste of time, money, and the earths resorces. Good party bags can be brilliant.

We had a brilliant party for DD's first birthday - bouncy castle - face painter, lots of pink helium balloons loads of summer party food, and as many baby girls and their siblings as we could find, as well as all the neighbours. Oh, and party bags, hand made ones from scraps of left over gingham fabric, filled with wholesome/ enviromentally friendly goodies.

So ner!

makemineagecko · 05/01/2009 22:16

piscesmoon- who said anything about oneupmanship?

makemineagecko · 05/01/2009 22:17

Ooh, Lynette- can we come to her second party? Sounds fab!

piscesmoon · 05/01/2009 22:20

It is onupmanship if you have a big party and bags because you feel pressurised-there is no need to do the same as others. If you want to do it-that is fine.

makemineagecko · 05/01/2009 22:23

Oh okay, got it

oliviasmama · 05/01/2009 22:43

We wanted to do it Lynette, big party, very big party and great fun....big hard work too

Deemented · 05/01/2009 23:24

Party bags are a mammys reward for putting up with 40 screaming 3-4 year olds for two hours.

Or that's what i told my boy....

ja9ladiesdancing · 05/01/2009 23:27

party bags rock... i think they might be the highlight of my ds's life¬ the tackier the better in his opinion...

where's the harm?

Soprana · 05/01/2009 23:36

What Littlefish said.
