Spotted a message on a Freecycle group asking for Playboy related stuff as my daughter has got to the age when she is into Playboy.

And what age would that be? I would hope they would be at least 18 if they have ambitions of being a porn star.

Do these parents not actually know what Playboy is all about, or do they just not look beyond the cutesy bunny logo??

Was so tempted to offer them some mags...

What happens when close relatives GIVE playboy presents to your teenage DD and she loves them??

DD is 13, BTW and I hate this crap.

Pheebe · 02/01/2009 18:03

They probably mean just that rabbit image, it was everywhere a while ago on duvet covers, t-shirts, purses, everything and targeted at early teens I think - apparently its very different to the whole porn playboy thing

NumberFour · 02/01/2009 18:03

i am sitting alongside you being judgey!
bloody ridiculous if you ask me(which you did, incidentally!)

BouncingTurtle · 02/01/2009 18:04

I have a friend ho has this same problem when people buy her Bratz branded stuff for her 7yo!

my daughter aged 12 now went into whsmith to buy a diary a couple of years ago and was horrified when she came out with a playboy one, I just told her I didn't think it suitable and told her in simple terms what playboy is all about, she hasn't got anything else playboy since

BouncingTurtle · 02/01/2009 18:05

Pheebe - yes, I think you could be right.

There really are people out there who are that clueless.

At age 7 I could have gotten away with "mislaying" said items, but at 13? She loves her nasty pink full length mirror and chavtastic bunny necklace. Have discussed the whole exploitation of women thing ad nauseum, but she still loves playboy.

MillyR · 02/01/2009 18:06

On the list of things that would really wind me up (apart from Miss World things like wanting world peace), I would rank this in the top ten, but maybe only about number 6.

Playboy is the Macdonalds of sex.

Most men like to eat at Macdonalds occasionally; this is no reason for anyone to dress their daughter in a Macdonalds' uniform.

She should be developing her own, non commercialised sexuality if she is a teenager.

BouncingTurtle · 02/01/2009 18:08

God that reminds me, I have a friend who loves Playboy stuff, she is 28!

chavs (sorry).

littleboyblue · 02/01/2009 18:10

My 13 year old niece has loads of playboy stuff, I don't know how her parents feel about it, but surely it doesn't have to be about playby/porn star/stripper unless you make it into that iyswim?

NumberFour · 02/01/2009 18:10

ignorant in the real sense of the word

zanz1bar · 02/01/2009 18:11

Move along the bench and make room for me please.
I had a rant in brentx whsmith about 4 years ago when the craze first started
It may only be the logo but its all part of a worldwide brand based on the selling of pornographic images of women.
Please god let our preteen daughters find a better craze...knitting own leg hair into feminist socks?

KatieScarlett2833 · 02/01/2009 18:11

My point was, when you see my lovely DD out and about sporting Hefner's jewellery, please do not judge the parents. You have no idea who gave them this carp.

NumberFour · 02/01/2009 18:17

KatieS, I have not yet reached the stage you have with your DD, as my DS is only 4, but you have my sympathy.

My son has Fruit Shoots, Munchbunch, Haribos and a toy GUN (of sorts).... Sometimes ANYTHING to keep the peace.

My son, fortunately, detests pink, so it will be unlikely that he goes for the Playboy thing.

Err..... hang on: boys - Playboy - oh, f*ck it, you know what i mean

MillyR · 02/01/2009 18:17

When I was a teenager, my mum would not let my brother wear a black shirt, because to her it was associated with fascism. Looking back, I see this as absurd. My brother didn't wear it, despite the absurdity, because he didn't want to cause deep offence to my mum. Is there no way of making a teenage girl think the same way about Playboy?

I haven't got teenagers and I am dreading it, as I haven't any idea how to deal with stuff like this.

LIZS · 02/01/2009 18:17

I hope dd is never of "the age" then . We've successfully avoided Bratz thus far!

BouncingTurtle · 02/01/2009 18:23

KS - it is difficult!

KatieScarlett2833 · 02/01/2009 18:24

I have told my DD many, many times how I feel about Playboy. She doesn't care, she likes it. Her tat belongs to her. There is no solution. The more I protest, the more she likes it.....etc, etc.

You have no control over their clothes or appearance once they become teenagers.Trust me.

The targeting of young girls by the Playboy brand is one of the most pernicious and ingenius ploys - the brazenness of it takes my breath away.

KS: there is a difference between tolerating your dd wearing Playboy tat that she has bought with her own money and actively requesting it on Freecycle for her. You have my sympathy though - something that I will no doubt have to battle through one day with my 4yo dd1.

KatieScarlett2833 · 02/01/2009 18:37

Cheers lala, it'll be a tattoo next!!!

(Oh, please god, no)
