I thought with the the big stores suffering this year, we were practically going to get sale items thrown at us. How wrong was I?

Yep, you have to look carefully - some are just rolling out the same old crap they put out every sales and noone ever buys

IlanaK · 30/12/2008 17:00

I agree - the reductions were not great.

I had a brief look in monsoon (a few niceish things but not worth £50 really)
Topshop (again some nice bits, but all so expensive!!)
M&S - straight out again
Fenwicks, nothing much reduced

It was so dull and I'm quite glad we don't have any money!

naturalbornmum · 30/12/2008 17:27

YABVU. I think the sales have been the best this year - we have got some good bargains.

fizzbuzz · 30/12/2008 17:31

I agree nothing usfeul at all.

Whatever size dd is, there is never any clothes in her size. Gap used to do really good sales when ds was younger, but girlswear seems much much more expensive and much scarcer than boyswear.

Trying to get dd a coat for next year. None in her size anywhere.always always used to get ds's in sale.

All redcutions seem very small.......

mrsmaidamess · 30/12/2008 17:32

Boots has LOADS of great gift sets, half price. I have bought lovely No 7 make up, Soap and Glory bath stuff and Stella perfume, all really reduced. Its all cheap because its packed up as sets for Christmas.

Fivesetsofschoolfees · 30/12/2008 17:41

I have only been to Debenhams, and thought the sale was much the same as in previous years. I bought an own-brand suit which was half-price. I have done exactly the same thing for the last three years.

muggglewump · 30/12/2008 17:42

I've not been to one. We were in Edinburgh yesterday but I didn't think DD would appreciate being teken to Next and everytime I went pre DD (so 8 years ago) it was random clothes on a hanger that you had to fight for and took ages and was just too much effort, even for a skintoid like me!

We went to the toy department in Jenners instead and played with all the display toys in a way which would probably have some -mumsnetters a lot of people doing cats bum faces

Jazzicatz · 30/12/2008 17:42

I have just been out and thought it was pretty crap this year!

Heated · 30/12/2008 17:44

I've bought the dcs clothes from Boden, Next and MiniMode but agree - I think it may be worth waiting until later in the year.

socialpariah · 30/12/2008 17:55

I went to Bluewater today. What a nightmare. Christmas spirit well and truly left the building!!!!!

domesticslattern · 30/12/2008 18:22

That's weird. Like naturalborn mum I did quite well.

Went to Oxford Street (aaaaargh shiver!). 50% off all sale stuff in Cos; deep reductions and plenty of stock in Banana Republic; jumpers in Gap reduced from £23.99 to £6.99; did well for DD in the Next sale too (no I didn't get up at 5am!); Charles Tywhitt shirts very reduced for DH to wear to work; someone has already mentioned box sets from Boots being bargainous.

Came home though and said to DH that it looks like the economy is fucked, I have never seen so much stuff in the stores at sales time even with 50% or even 70% off.

newpup · 30/12/2008 18:29

I went shopping in the sales yesterday and got 2 huge bagfuls of beautiful clothes in monsoon children. I spent £275, which I know sounds shameful but the pre sale value was £500. Also DD1, has a whole winter wardrobe for this year, plus a load of summer stuff which will fit next year as well and then pass on to DD2.

I also bought 3 tops and a gorgeaus cardigan for £130 in Monsoon for me. The cardigan was reduced to £35 from £70 but the tops only had £10 each off.

We bought a sofabed for the playroom in John Lewis reduced by £200. Also bought some socks for DDs in Gap, all half price.

Got some le creuset dishes half price in Tesco too.

Going to look for some furniture tomorrow, hopefully will find what I am looking for!

I think that big items such as furniture and tvs etc are reduced quite alot.

Our tv broke in October so we had to buy a new one, original plan was to replace it in the sales and sure enough it is £200 cheaper now. Wish I could have persuaded Dh that we cold live without a tv for 3 months!!

M44 · 30/12/2008 18:33

Well-did OK- found a beautiful dress for dd for less than half price in M&S, tops in Gap and lovely things in The Pier- so sad it is closing. We got what we went looking for, oh and Boots clothing for the boys- did very well and bought some things to stock the present drawer all for a great price.

MrsSnape · 30/12/2008 18:34

I've only been in Next so far and their sale is crap. But then, their's usually is.

hidetheribbons · 31/12/2008 13:29

You might get more bargains if you wait until mid-January when the shops are really desperate to clear stock to get the new Spring stock in. At the moment they are keeping prices high because so many people are out doing their sale shopping over the Christmas break.

I agree, sales are rubbish - they expect you to buy any old tat just because it's reduced, sometimes from last winter . But retailers are really desperate so it's worth holding out for better reductions later on.

ChubbyChubs · 31/12/2008 14:06

I got loads of cheap Christmas decorations for next year and I got the coat I've wanted for months for £30 down from £70.

So I'm happy.

But generally, yes the sales are crap.
People seem to be buying stuff just for the sake of a 50% of sticker rather than it being something they wanted or needed, iykwim.

duckyfuzz · 31/12/2008 14:18

I got this coat but in black and for half price which I'm quite pleased with, avoided most places as they were like jumble sales though! Got some bedding and glasses from JL online too

nct73 · 01/01/2009 20:26

To prove how crap the sales are this year - took coat DD got for Christmas back to Gap to swap for next size up and found it is now MORE expensive in the sales than in the pre Christmas offers. They did agree just to swap for me & not charge the difference.

Everything in Boots was half price but nowt in DD's size - was esp looking for dressing gowns & slippers which had been promised for Christmas but turned into ITNG books that she already had (grr). A couple of friends did well at Next but generally things a bit sparse and not great discounts.

Goober · 01/01/2009 20:28

Officers club very good, but how sad.

Deemented · 01/01/2009 20:42

Well, i managed to get some cracking sales bargains.

I got a new sofa from argos, reduced from £400 to £171 - and it was buy one get one free.

I also managed to get brand new venetian blinds for all ten windows in my new house for just £109!

I also got 4 pairs of 90 x 90 curtains, reduced from £100 to just £40 for the lot.

You just have to know where to look...

higgle · 01/01/2009 20:53

I agree that on the whole the sales are not god this year. I went to Cheltenham on Monday and there are loads of signs out saying "up to 70% off" and "many items £5" but when you go inside it is hard to find anything with more than 20% off at all. And lots of the shops are filling up with spring stuff already, and I must say it is expensive and boring looking. Joules, HoF and most of the shoe shops had good sales, Jigsaw Hobbs and East were definately playing games. Whittard were worst - all the crappy chunky yellow mugs reduced to nearly nothing and no reductions at all on the classy glass teapots etc. I bought a few genuinely reduced things - boots, a skirt and some earrings, but won't be shedding any tears when some of the others go down the pan over the next few months, they thin we are total mugs.

Winehouse · 01/01/2009 20:57

I failed to get to the sales at all this year. I usually buy next year's Christmas cards but I have a massive stock of them now and I couldn't face fighting with lots of middle aged women in M&S.

starbear · 01/01/2009 21:07

Fab coat duckyfuzz I agree with you, its the jumble sale look that puts me right off.
Around here trying to buy anything for a 5 year old is impossible. Its odd the council didn't expect so many 5 years old market analyst didn't either. My Mum and sister are great bargain hunters because they have the time (& very little money) In November December they go window shopping try things on and make notes. If they things they like are in the sales &their size they then buy it. makes total sense to me BUT I never have the time or the inclination as I hate shopping (unless its with my sister who is my personal shopper as well) I love her
