To think that dd's grandmother should know how to spell her name?

My dd, Lydia, is 15 months old. When she was born MIL had to ask several times: 'What's that baby's name again?'

Now, despite being told otherwise, she still addresses cards to 'Lidia.'

AIBU to be annoyed that she hasn't bothered to learn her gdd's name yet?

I have several relatives who spell several of my kids' names wrong (three in one card is the record I think )! It kind of jars but meh, life's too short and all that. Combination of laziness and unfamiliarity.

However, if you think that MIL is spelling it wrong simply to get on your nerves (as some MILs like to do), then really, don't let it upset you because that is obviously what she wants! As the saying goes - smile - it makes your enemies wonder what you are up to

fledtoscotland · 29/12/2008 21:43

my in-laws cannot spell ds1's name. FFS its Matthew NOT MATHEW. not exactly a difficult name. having said that they havent been able to spell my name correctly and DH & I have been together nearly 12 yrs

Ashantai · 29/12/2008 21:52

My daughter Sharna has to live with her nan not only spelling her name wrong, but constantly calling her SHAUNA!

Used to grate on me, but its been 10 years now, so its kinda expected

lea1980 · 29/12/2008 22:02

im 28 and my nan still spells my name wrong!! also in our christmas card, she had to cross out the name she put for my ds cos she had put my sisters name instead..they are kind of similar (ds is seth, sister is steph)!!!
in fact, my name is hardly ever spelt correctly...thats the problem with variations..nobody knows these days!

zipzap · 29/12/2008 22:09

Make sure you write her name wrongly on anything you write to her - if she queries it you can just say that you assumed that, as she insisted on spelling DD's name wrong despite being told otherwise, she was expecting you to spell her name wrong too...

MERLYPUSSEDASAFART · 29/12/2008 22:17

My MIL spells DT2's name wrong and gets DT1's middle name completely wrong. She Has him down as Josh when he is William. Worse than that she has had a stone (or something) dedicated to them in her temple and both the names are wrong. Nice idea though.

bellavita · 29/12/2008 22:38

My Grandma (bless her she died about 6 years ago aged 87) never spelt my name right.

Instead of finishing my name with "ina" it was always "ian"

FrannyandZooey · 29/12/2008 22:47

oh i forgot my aunt who addressed this year's card to
franny, mr franny, ds1, and ds1's middle name

wtf?
she didn't even spell the middle name right LOL

Colbeck · 29/12/2008 22:52

I spell poeles names wrong all the time.

I honestly don't notice how things are spelt and so have no idea which way to write it when I need to.eg sarah particuarly difficult. I would probably spell that a different way each time in the hope of one day getting it right.

I think I'd get Lydia right though.

My friend addressed a christmas card to me DH and my old dogs name instead of DS. Found this amusing rather than upsetting though.

MmeLindt · 29/12/2008 22:56

My Gran used to address Xmas cards to my parents to "Brain and Gean".

Yanbu but you might have to get used to it.

plantsitter · 29/12/2008 23:44

I totally understand the sara/h difficulty. I think my gran topped it one year with 'saharara' though.

feedthegoat · 29/12/2008 23:48

After 32 years mine still signs her cards 'lots of love Grandmar' so quite frankly wouldn't bat an eyelid at how she spelt our names!

squik · 29/12/2008 23:49

My Nan not only never spelt dd's name right, but never pronounced it right either. Poor love is gone now.

Colbeck · 29/12/2008 23:55

LOL at Saharara!!

Both me and Dh have names with alterbnatiuve spellings and we get chrtimas cards from good frinds who spell it the other way. I am very relaxed about this what with being so crap myself and all.

Ronaldinhio · 29/12/2008 23:58

yabu

my nanna calls my dd Chloe not Zoe

her name is Zoe btw

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 30/12/2008 00:04

fofl! DD is Beth - grandma sent a card to Beff. Still makes me smile now - no harm done, she's a slightly dippy old bird called Doris!

solo · 30/12/2008 00:07

My mum spells her eldest grandsons name as Samual, despite being told. It's not intentional though.

solo · 30/12/2008 00:07

Helloooooo Miaou! long time no see!

RockinSockBunnies · 30/12/2008 02:05

My aunt (also my godmother) has never yet spelled my name correctly on a card.

However, the biggest trouble is with DD's name, Phoebe (her middle name is Lydia btw - great minds and all )

When she was born, I had cards saying 'Congratulations on the birth of'...

Feeby
Feebie
Pheobe
Phobe
Phobie
Feobie

DD constantly bemoans the fact that she was given a name that no-one seems able to spell!

LadyOfWaffle · 30/12/2008 02:10

Us poor ol' Sarahs always get mispelt, but my MIL spells Joseph - Joesepher and all manner of variations. Usually spells Sarah Sharha or something too. YANBU.

seeker · 30/12/2008 06:10

I have two neices - one called Catharine and the other Katherine - I think. I KNOW I probably get them the wrong way round at least 50% of the time. It's not malicious - it's just incompetence.

Lazycow · 30/12/2008 07:59

I must say somne people are just like this I think. My dad has called my mother Antonia for 60 years, The fact that her name is Lina seems to have escaped him , My mother never worked out why he did this as no-one has ever called her Antonia - she just got used to it over the years.

He wouldn't be able to spel my ds's name at all as it is in a foreign language to him and he has trouble pronouncing it so often converts it to the Italian equivalent to suit him. I can be a bit annoying I suppose but on the whole it doesn't bother me.

MrsMagooo · 30/12/2008 09:54

The best variation I've had of my name as been Kimberleigh!

It's actually spelt Kymberly!

heather1980 · 30/12/2008 10:24

my DH gran sent a card this year to alexandra, which is ok but my SON is called alexander!
and my dh aunt still can't spell his name right after 30 years, he's called michael and she always spells is micheal - everytime
my sister is lorna she often gets laura, lourna, luna etc etc. poor thing

Miaou · 30/12/2008 10:27

hello solo! Just dipping my toes back in

(sorry for hijack)
