To expect to be treated with some level of customer service?

OK, soI have just come back from Asda where I bought some wrapping paper for next xmas. I picked it up out of a box which had a huge sign on it saying 50p but when I got to the checkout it went through the till at £1.

So... the girl on the til (who was lovely btw) pressed that button and spoke to someone on the intercom and asked her to come and check but the woman on the other end said "if it says £1 that's how much it is". So I asked if she could come over and look where I got it from - so the woman comes over and starts ranting at me about her colleague having priced all the paper yesterday and they're all half price so the stuff I had was a £1 (didn't want to tell her that half of £1.97 isn't actually £1...). I asked why they were in a box saying 50p then and she just repeated that they weren't they were reduced yesterday to £1 (basically called me a liar). I asked her to go check and even pointed the box out to her as the til was just infront of the aisle where the box was, but she refused. So I said that there were loads more in the same box and that if the price was wrong it might be a good idea to move them at which point she walked off IN THE OTHER DIRECTION.

I'm not even angry about the paper being proced wrong anymore, it was the attitude of the member of staff who acted like I was wasting her time.

So now I feel like complaining about her attitude. What do you think? Is it too much to expect be treated with some level of respect and customer service? Or am I just grumpy?

Ours give you the difference back plus a £2 gift card if they get it wrong. She probably didn't want the hassle.
No excuse for rudeness though.

She was appallingly rude. My dh and my mother would have seen the store manager to advise them on their staff training but I've always scurried to the car by then

I admire your frugality re the wrapping paper.

Customer service is one of my personal pet peeves. Tbh, I waste far too much time on it. Asda's corporate philosophy is to treat workers poorly. However, that does not mean they get to pass along the corporate culture to you the customer. I understand that working retail and/or customer relations is very stressful. On the other hand, it is part of their job.

I don't know that writing a letter will solve anything if you didn't get the employee's name.

(I'll preface the next comment with the fact that I am an American and so rudeness is part of my genetic make-up.) When I find myself faced with rude employees, I paste a smile on my face and calmly ask to speak with the manager. If the manager can not resolve my problem, I ask to speak to their manager. I stay very calm. I collect names. And I will hold up a line until my issue is resolved. Usually, they can tell by my calm, friendly, assertive behaviour that I'm not going anywhere and just fix it. However, if the matter doesn't get resolved, I write an email with dates, times and names. Often, I get an apology and a gift certificate back.

Just a tip for future events. (As they happen all to often these days.)

AuntieMaggie · 29/12/2008 17:20

Oh I got her name. And I have the time and date on my receipt.

Rudeness is one of my pet peeves especially from people who are supposed to be there to help you! Just no need for it.

Complain. She was totally unprofessional. Nothing will every change if no one complains.

This sort of sloppy service and misleading information is annoying. We pay supermarkets vast sums of money each week and it's reasonable to expect accuracy and polite service in return. I tend to avoid Asda because their service and ethical record is not great.

Not all cheap supermarkets are bad though; I shop at Lidl sometimes and find their service exemplary.

mrstimlovejoy · 29/12/2008 19:16

on 2 occassions i've had similiar happen in asda but the items 1 a pineapple and 1 a bag of potatoes both put in the wrong place by staff with the label saying they were cheaper then they actually were.on ist occassion i noticed at the till and the chap that came to check was very rude he said your the 4th person to complain.i said well aren't you going to move them then he just walked off.girl on checkout let me have it at cheaper price.

Ashantai · 29/12/2008 22:10

She was very rude, and regardless of the shit day i have had, i'm never rude to customers no matter how they wind me up!!

In our store, we've had a few items that were priced incorrectly and we've had to honour the price and then take down the signage pretty damn quick!

corkyOrorky · 29/12/2008 23:53

YANBU. She should have admitted the cock-up and honoured the price.

Anybody with half an ounce of retail experience would have sorted this out for you.

ruddynorah · 30/12/2008 00:02

we can always withdraw items from sale when stuff like this happens.

half the time you have customers changing tags etc on purpose. those are the ones who very loudly pronounce that you HAVE to sell it to them at the price.

you tend to want to help out the nice customers who understand it was a mistake or whatever. the obnoxious ones who go on and on and on ...you really don't want to budge an inch for.
