i know he works hard and deserves an afternoon of bingeing but come on - £50!? it would take me ages to spend that... just don't understand how money can just slip through his fingers. drives me insane.
why do men always have to go over the top? (ok total generalisation there but you know what i mean?!)
he comes home totally stressing about losing his overtime and then it transpires he's spent £50 in one afternoon?!

aaagggghhh!

yanbu, do you think it was down to peer pressure?

expatinscotland · 23/12/2008 18:00

YANBU.

We all work hard!

We're pretty skint, too, so we're doing New Year's for £30 with our next-door neighbours coming round and a friend up from London.

That includes our share of the booze!

nvj · 23/12/2008 18:01

yes they all buy rounds and i think he had a sandwich and chips etc and i'm sure a packet of fags came in there too, even though he has supposedly given up.... hmph.
he is now asleep on the sofa... SO MAD!!!

i wouldn't have minded so much if they'd got a bonus from work which they normally do at xmas time but they didn't get anything this yr due to economic climate etc. he just doesn't think sometimes.

pretty gutted when money you really need is "wasted" on booze fags and chips.
not trying to make excuses for him as i would be mad too,
but do yu think he realises how hard it is to make the money last and how far that would of gone for your family?

nvj · 23/12/2008 18:08

oh i'll certainly be telling him tomorrow in no uncertain terms how mad i am although don't want to ruin xmas by going on about it. honestly i just wish he would think sometimes....
can't wait til Jan when he is supposedly going on a detox (yeh right!) lol

The selfishness aspect would make me . If there is £50 to spare (and it sounds like there isn't) then half of it is surely yours. Hope you can sort it out.

nvj · 23/12/2008 18:14

no there's not £50 to spare. not at all! that's what makes me so cross, he knows how worried i am about our money situation and then does this! he has no concept of responsibility sometimes.

zoggs · 23/12/2008 18:18

Well, he's done it now and can't undo it so damage limitation is the best option I think. Make sure he understands WHY you are upset, ie what that money would otherwise be used for. Don't fall out over it unless it is part of a bigger problem. It is easy to get through £50 when buying in rounds

He certainly owes you a few favours though. And £50 to spend in the Sales.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/12/2008 18:31

YANBU

i would be furious if my dh did that and money was tight

what was his excuse?

WalkinginWaynettaWonderland · 23/12/2008 18:33

What Zoggs said.....

pamelat · 23/12/2008 18:57

My Dh is out on his work do today, 1pm onwards. He will spend about this and he is being made redundant in Jan.

However, I will try not to say anything as its a one off and I know he is stressed about the job situation.

However, YANBU

I went out and spent £15 all night on my work do but I was only out 2 hours so its easier I guess.

loobeylou · 23/12/2008 19:08

zoggs, the whole point is THEY DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO SPARE, so saying "he owes you £50 to spend in the sales" is not going to help. OP will be having to find ways of cutting back on essentials, not splashing out in the sales!!

sounds like the OPs DP wants to bury his head in the sand and not face up to grown up responsibilities, but hiding never works!! OP, is he aware of your weekly/monthly budget, food bills etc, or do you worry on your own about the finances for the family? he needs a reality check.

pamelat · 23/12/2008 19:29

but its cheaper than therapy, especially if only a one off.
