I bought a packet of ten charity cards and that was all; am very conscious of their environmental impact. I am in trouble though because within those ten I forgot (don't know how I did this) to write one for the out-laws.

The girls had one packet each from Oxfam to send to school friends. Fortunately there is one left and dp will be racing it round to mil tomorrow!

And I organised a charity collection at work instead of sending cards.

Seasonofgoodwill · 05/12/2009 17:00

I love sending and receiving Christmas cards. They are a colourful way to brighten up the winter while spreading goodwill. They are recyclable too.

Why do people single out Christmas cards as being a "waste of card"? There are so many other ways to save paper or card throughout the year, such as not buying a newspaper one weekend, not printing out so many documents, not buying cardboard-wrapped food, or joining the MPS to reduce junk mail.

Does it really make sense to buy/use/consume various not-strictly-necessary things during the rest of the year, and then suddenly decide that Christmas cards are wasteful? Shouldn't the things which bring good cheer to others be the last things to go, not the first?

I don't send them as it's a waste of paper and yeah I probably can't be arsed to write them but what's it matter to you. You're not on my list.

nickelbabe · 05/12/2009 17:09

i can't be bothered with it, but i'm still doing it.
as soon as ex gets off his arse and copies the list of addresses down so i can have the bloody book back so i can actually send them!

i don't see most of my friends often at all (we're all scattered around the country) so it's a card that says, i'm still here, i still love you.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 05/12/2009 17:09

The environmental reason is perfectly valid - We try to reduce the amount of waste we produce all year round. Why should Christmas be any different? It is better to reduce (or reuse) before recycling.

However , I also subscribe to the "better things to do with my time and money" excuse

Brink · 05/12/2009 17:11

i just got all excited and thought Hecate was back

but its from last year

Morloth · 05/12/2009 17:13

I have never bothered, simply can't be arsed.

I think cards are stupid, they go straight into the recycling bin here I am afraid. I look at it, go "that's nice" and then toss. I have enough shit cluttering up my house.

Everyone who knows us, knows we feel this way so don't send them to us.

I'm not sending any as I see it as a total waste of time.

I am bone idol a bit lazy and see no point in sending cards to folk I see daily, and can say Merry Christmas to, in person, in a more heartfelt manner.

I wish people wouldn't send them to me, as I have to either send them one back, which means my lying around time is disturbed, or I have to go into some nonsense explanation about rainforests, and pretend I care and then come across and a bit judgey and weird.

What does a girl have to do these days to be lazy in peace?

SolosScrapingUpForXmas · 05/12/2009 17:30

Haven't sent any since 2006(except the odd few close people). I sent texts out wishing people and saying I couldn't afford to do it this year. Was also 9 months pg and couldn't be arsed.
2007 and 2008 again texts.

This year, I'm still very broke, but after the great support my family received after Dads death this year, I will be sending a few out.
