To feel that the latest Batman film was maybe not appropriate

for last day of term viewing for a Y7 class. I know it is a 12, but that grading was also quite controversial because of the violence involved. DD1 was sickened by it - and in any case she and the majority of her classmates are still only 11.
The boys were glued to it apparently, and the girls were disgusted.
SO AIBU to feel the teacher might have chosen better?

A strange choice - did they vote for it or something?

harleyd · 19/12/2008 21:27

Cornsilk - they voted between Batman and St Trinians apparently. All the girls voted for St Trinians and all the boys Batman. That made 14 for each and teacher came down with casting vote for Batman. And then left the room.
Maybe DD and her friends are super sensitive but they were upset.

IMO in the event of a tie the teacher should have tossed a coin or something, not picked one film which then dismissed the wishes of half the class

cornsilk · 19/12/2008 21:50

Shame she couldn't have put one on a laptop and let them watch it half and half.

June2009 · 20/12/2008 16:24

I just watched it and thought it was very dark and I'm 31.
Films have ratings for a reason, they should have found a more suitable film, a comedy maybe?

pinkspottywellies · 20/12/2008 16:29

If it's a 12 and half the class are 11 then it's not appropriate (I want to say 'end of' here but it's not an expression I use!) unless the parents of all the 11 year olds parents have consented.

Jacanne · 20/12/2008 17:15

I don't think you're unreasonable at all - it was very dark and violent - as an adult I really enjoyed it but there was a young lad at the cinema sitting next to us (probably about younger than 12) who has petrified and his mum spend most of the film shielding him from it.

bronze · 20/12/2008 17:16

Small soldiers was a 12. I find this really odd if batman is as well. There doesn't seem to be consistency.

I agree with the pinkspottyone

TeenyTinyTorya · 20/12/2008 17:18

YANBU at all - far too dark, violent and adult. There were small children (aged 6/7ish) in the screening I went to see, and they were terrified.

unfitmother · 20/12/2008 17:23

Oh dear, I have bought DS (11.5) this for Christmas

YANBU btw

ChubbyDickAndSnowBalls · 20/12/2008 17:24

I hid behind my hands a few times and I'm 28!!

I wouldn't be happy if I was in your shoes.

TinselianAstra · 20/12/2008 17:26

When I was 13 or 14 we watched Schindler's list as part of a history lesson on WWII. Our teacher fast-forwarded it (video, y'see, not DVD) through some bits, I think they had nakedness in them

TeenyTinyTorya · 20/12/2008 17:30

Batman should have been a 15 IMO.

unfitmother, there is a site you can go on if you want to check the content before you give it to ds. It's here

harleyd · 20/12/2008 17:31

blimey
my kids love it
as do i

TeenyTinyTorya · 20/12/2008 17:33

It's a brilliant film, and Heath Ledger was disturbing and amazing in it, but I wouldn't have made it a 12A.

maretta · 20/12/2008 17:36

YANBU

Biglipsdrankallthexmasbaileys · 20/12/2008 17:38
