To be annoyed that the bank won't accept my money?

I went to Alliance and Leicester today to deposit some bags of coins (all correctly bagged in bmoney bags). They would only accept 5 bags , I had 18 in total, and told to go to the Post Office to get the rest put into my account. They say that 5 bags/customer/day is the most that they will accept, citing a "small safe" as the reason.

I then had to traipse to the Post Office and wait in a gigantic queue with dd (2.6) to pay my money into my bank account.

I told the counter staff and the man at the Customer Service station in the bank that I thought this was an appalling example of customer service which had left this customer very annoyed .

think most banks have the "5 bags a day" rule - and have done for years.

nickytinseltimes · 16/12/2008 13:17

That does seem a bit off when you were trying to pay them into the account.

UnfortunatelyMe · 16/12/2008 13:18

The halifax lets you pay them into kids accounts more than 5 bags.

mumblechum · 16/12/2008 13:18

18 bags?????

What the hell have you been doing, woman?

I always take bags of change to the machine in the supermarket which automatically changes it into notes. No queing, no sorting first. It costs a tiny bit like 2% or something but much better than farting around with banks.

YABU

This has been the situation in most banks for years. I'm surprised you didn't know or check it out beforehand.

And 'small safe' is the reason - where do you expect them to keep it? Piles on the floor. They can't exactly rebuild the branches to make more room.

Change takes up a hell of a lot of room and if everyone brought in that many bags they wouldn't have room for the staff.

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 16/12/2008 13:19

Unfortunately - they may for the kids accounts - but they don't for adult ones (I bank with them).

I just bag up coins and take them in once I have 5 - got 3 totally £16 at the moment, only 2 more to go - hoping i can get them in before Christmas.

UnfortunatelyMe · 16/12/2008 13:19

I think its 7% or thereabouts at our supermarket machine

HassledElf · 16/12/2008 13:19

In my PTA capacity I pay in 20+ bags of coins several times a year, and there has never been mention of small safes. It is a charity account, rather than personal, but I can't really see why that makes a difference.

Simplysally · 16/12/2008 13:20

They'll be thinking about the time it takes to weigh them and the queue getting frantic.

kslatts · 16/12/2008 14:24

In Nationwide the 5 bags a day rule doesn't apply to children's or charity accounts.

It seems a bit of a stupid rule anyway, imagine if you were relying on the money to cover a direct debit going out the following day, it would bounce and the bank would charge £30, even though you had tried to pay in legal tender the day before.
It's not as if they have to count it out by hand.

what WOULD they have done had you said "I need this money in my account to pay X bill out tomorrow"

I just felt annoyed that it was legal tender that I wanted to pay into my account and they were turning me away.

In future I will just go to the Post Office where the woman was perfectly helpful. I don't really believe the 'small safe' arguement tbh but I suspect it's just part of a drive to efficiency and reducing counter staff in general.

I work for bradford & bingley (part of santander that also owns A&l) and we have had the 5 bags rule for years, ours is because we do not get our chnage collected tehrefore we have to go to our business bank and change it up and for insurance/h&s we're only allowed to carry a certain amount (value and weight) also if you have a small safe its a bugger to fit everything in it!
