next door is having something done to their roof today.. 2 men on the roof fiddling with tiles this morning. No-one said anything- i mean normally why should the neighbour in this case? their roof being done shouldn't disturb us.

During about 9.30 and 11ish i kept hearing little noises that sounded like lots of bits falling between our houses. at 11.30 i had to leave the house with DD to go and collect DS from nursery... notices a lot of tile bits and concrete grouting was in my driveway and path between the 2 houses.. gathered that was what the noise was.

On the way back with both DC's when we got to the end of the driveway one of the roofers saw us, and watched us walk up the drive, as i put my key in the front door a pretty good chunk of concrete flew down and hit the floor about 3ft away from where DD was stood!! i quickly hurried us in, part of me thought it might have been accidental, but then while i was in the kitchen making lunches i could see loads more bits coming down between the houses, and one massive half tile size piece was actually flung off the neighbours roof, hit my house, bounced off and hit the neighbours, then bounced back over and hit my house before landing on my side of the fence devide.....

now i'm not happy- it must have been flung pretty hard to bounce off houses like that, and what if it had hit my bathroom window? or back door? and i'm now thinking the concrete might have been flung, what if it had hit DD in the head? I'm not gutsey enough to go out and shout about it, instead i just want them gone so i can examine my house.... van is outside with a number on the back and web address... i'm considering complaining... but dont know if i have the guts for that either in case they are the only people who work for the company... they aren't a big company at all- very local- neighbours are new so dont really know them enough...

what do i do?

I'd call the number and say the fiddlers on the roof and lobbing big fuck off chunks of concrete around and you're frightened someone may get hurt.

CharleeInPantoPaperChains · 16/12/2008 12:38

DO thet have a van outside with a company name/phone number you could call and speak to thier supervisor?

mumblechum · 16/12/2008 12:39

Just go and tell them if they chuck anything else onto your property you'll phone their boss.

MerryMadMarg · 16/12/2008 12:39

Sorry for the sharp post, but they may have caused some damage to your house, and that is just not on. You need to take some photos for evidence, and you MUST speak to them.

If you have your neighbour's contact details then you should ring them. Maybe your council could do something? If a building is dangerous, they can act, surely they must be able to act if the process of building is dangerous?!

ScottishMummy · 16/12/2008 12:39

phone building contreol at local council, report unsafe site activity.only take photo if safe to do so.call police station for advice re throwing rubble you felt frightened

IcedAgeOfXmas · 16/12/2008 12:40

And if they hit a pigeon, call RSPCA.

Or go outside and say

"Oi fuckers! whats your game lobbing shit around that could hurt someone?" then pick one of the chucks up and throw it at them whilst screaming at the top of your voice and then say "come on you bastards! I'll have ya!"

By then they'll probably think you're a bit nuts and leave.

hippipotami · 16/12/2008 12:41

I would have shouted something up to them when that large piece landed 3 ft away from your ds.
I would also tell them that if they don't come onto your drive and sweep away the mess they have made you will phone their head office.
Then I would stand well out of the way and take photographs.

Because they will end up damaging something at this rate and their is no way you should just accept they are doing this.

iheartdusty · 16/12/2008 12:42

I would speak to them immediately. No need to complain - not yet, anyway - just point out that you have small children, and bits are falling in your property. Tell them that you need them to put up some netting or tarpaulins to protect your kids and windows.

if they fob you off, stand your ground. Tel them your next call will be the environmental health and building control departments of your local council.

then ring council.

and put note through neighbours door - it's not their fault, they probably don't even know, but they are responsible.

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 16/12/2008 12:42

I've just been to the back door and been able to take photo's of the big pieces that have been hitting my house, will go out and examine my house afterwards... i think i will phone the number... i dont want to say anything to the men on the roof as they dont look very nice at all (can you tell i'm normally a quiet little mouse in RL)

OP posts:
hippipotami · 16/12/2008 12:42

Yes, phone their office, now.

iheartdusty · 16/12/2008 12:43

take photos of where they are next to your house as well, not just the pieces close up if you see what I mean.

Libraloveschristmas1975 · 16/12/2008 12:44

If you are too timid to shout at them, go outside and show them this thread

seriously, you need to go and tell them to stop. Pretend you are talking to 5 year old boys and then ring the company and complain some more. chunks of concrete are not on.

StephanieByng · 16/12/2008 12:44

Yes surely they should have a chute or something to put things down safely? That sounds really dangerous.

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 16/12/2008 12:45

right... i've just phoned Dh too... he said if need be he'll come home to have words with them...

IcedAge- that really did make me LOl!!

wingandprayer · 16/12/2008 12:46

Is there scaffolding? Is against health and safety rules to be up ladder and on roof. Also they are working with due care and attention so yes council would be very keen to hear about the fact they acting with such blatant disregard for both people and your property. Phone them for advice on what to do next, take builder's details, get photos and make sure you let your neighbours know later (not to shout at them but to make sure they know builders behaving like bunch of cowboys).

ajandjjmum · 16/12/2008 12:48

Ask to see their Health and Safety policy.

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 16/12/2008 12:50

have just phoned the company, spoke to a nice lady who was really angry that i've felt the need to phone, she said its not on that they aren't using their equipment that should be in the van on the front!!

She's taken all my details, will get back to me asap, is phoning the roofers to tell them and she said if they throw anythign else down to phone her and thigns will be stopped staright away and they will be dealt with before other roofers are sent to do the job

OP posts:
ScottishMummy · 16/12/2008 12:51

you can report to HSEby telephone
unsafe site practice
near miss
non compliance with safety regs
appear to lack appropriate ecquipment eg covered chute

sb6699 · 16/12/2008 13:03

So have they stopped?

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 16/12/2008 13:05

nothing has been thrown off the roof since i phoned and the van is open and i've seen some things come out that i'm certain should have been used to begin with!!

Now i'm scared to leave the house as i'm the 'evil neighbour who grassed them up'

OP posts:
ScottishMummy · 16/12/2008 13:15

phone HSE they can close down sites and impose fines for poor practice
