To be upset with a houseguest for coming to stay whilst ill

A friend came to stay over on Friday hrough to Saturday evening and it transpires she has had a chest infection for weeks and whilst visiting had a bad cold and hacking cough.

I wasnt impressed that she didnt warn me in advance as I would have asked her not to come as cant afford to take time off work if my DS becomes ill and cant attend nursery. (would have to take unpaid leave and as I am a lone parent I need my income!)

However its me thats ill now..started to get ill Saturday afternoon..doctor diagnosed it yesterday as a chest infection. Are chest infection contagious? How likely is it that i got it from her. Im really annoyed with her as this isnt the first time she has come to stay ill, last time it was a stomach upset!

Before I have a word with her and ask her not to visit whilst ill again I just wanted to ask for advice on how to tackle it. She doesnt have children and to be honest I dont think she even considered us getting ill.

Hello. Sorry to hear you are feeling ill. Not sure but don't think you can pass on a chest infection although you can pass on a virus which could cause a chest infection. I sympathise totally with you, my in-laws never cancel a visit even if they have something horrible. They have visited with colds, viruses and even when DD1 was a toddler a stomach upset!!!

However, it seems at the moment everybody and his dog are ill with coughs, colds and viruses. So, you could have picked it up from anywhere. Maybe, you could ask her not to come next time if she is ill?

hope you feel better soon ( do not get me started on the number of children, clearly unwell, being dropped off at DD's school, this morning!

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 16/12/2008 12:43

I've stopped moaning (mostly!) about how rubbish I feel now after being in school this morning. every single adult was full of cough and cold. dds teacher has entirely lost her voice. The Christmas service was interestingly chesty!

Well an infection someone's had for weeks will be a secondary infection stemming from a virus they had ages ago so not infectious to you. Therefore your illness will not be down to your friend. Even if her illness were a new one developing this past weekend, that's one v quick transmission and I'd guess you were already going down with it at the same time as your friend was with hers.

Yanbu.
Chest infections are potentially contagious.
It is very rude to turn up to someone's house with an illness without mentioning it.
ANd yes, the number of children being dumped at playgroup with fevers, etc is terrible.

There are so many bugs going around atm you could have caught it off anyone, eg the person infront of you in the queue at the checkout.

Its probably coincidence your ill now

VinegarTitsTheSeasonToBeJolly · 16/12/2008 12:49

Oh this is getting on my nerves now

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 16/12/2008 12:52

agree with alphabet.

I usually send my DS's into school after they've been on their anitbiotics for chest infections for 24hrs - they're always secondary infections caused by a common cough/cold.

VinegarTitsTheSeasonToBeJolly Please DONT go on the same thread as Spamm

aidansyummymummy · 16/12/2008 13:09

Thanks everyone, did think it was very quick to catch it off her so prob not entirely her fault.

Think I will message her something along the lines "dont feel bad as prob not your fault im ill however in future before you visit if you are feeling unwell or recovering from an illness can you let me know as I would rather know in advance and cancel then exposure us to more germs particulary as we both have weakened immune systems at the mo"

YANBU.

She probably gave you the cold that lead to her infection.

Yes, there is a lot going round just the now, but she's probably the likely culprit.

babylovessanta · 16/12/2008 13:24

YABU. I could understand your arguement if she had D&V or a serious bug but my GP said if a person is well enough to do 'normal' things they should as other people will catch bugs somewhere else anyway! As long as your friend was able to take part normally then I think that is ok.

aidansyummymummy · 16/12/2008 19:04

Ok so maybe its not her fault I'm ill but I still think she was out of order to visit whilst ill - this is the second time she has done this but the previous occasion I cant be sure she knew she was ill before she came. I dont want her to think its acceptable and do it a third time!

Anyway im now feeling so rough, just hoping im better to go away for christmas to visit the family. Anyone have a experience of how long chest infections take to clear up, i've never had one before.
