To have had a go at these 'mums' in the playground?

It's DDs christmas party today and we were asked to take crisps in. So I sent DD with a paper plater with four packets of crisps on it (still in their bags obviously) covered with cling foil.

When we got to the school gate DD ran off to play and then returned to say I had to take the crisps off the plate as her friends were taking the mick out of her. All of the other kids that had taken crisps had just taken a multipack bag of crisps in as they are.

I told her not to be silly and to cut a long story short, when I walked her to her line I heard one of the other mothers saying to her son "give me your biscuits so I can present them on a plate nicely with clingfilm" and she and a few other mums started laughing.

DD was looking daggers at me so I asked the woman if she had a problem and she said "no, I just don't like the way you have to try and go one better than everyone else all the time". All this because I put the crisps on a bloody plate??

I suppose inapropriate was just being helpful and making the teachers job a bit easier. I always do that (never heard the sarky comments though0, how different is it from preslicing a cake or take grapes off the stems.

The people who made that comment are just idiots IMO. I would not take to much notice of it.

prettybutterfly · 15/12/2008 12:26

Well, in fact it IS quite a funny thing to do. I would have found it funny, and I might even have laughed. But I'd have died before I let you see that I was amused, as I do think that's rude.

So yanbu to mind but yabu to have a go. Should have held head high and ignored it.

Also, erm, yabu to do dafty crisp presentation. Don't do it again!

J2O · 15/12/2008 12:26

no big deal to put it on a plate imo, i probably wouldn't but that is because i am lazy

ComeOVeneer · 15/12/2008 12:26

They were being unecessary, however personal I don't see 4 packets of unopened crisps and a paper plate covered in cling film looks particularly special or like you have made an effort tbh.

I was just trying to make it look a bit nicer than simply giving DD a bag to take in.

The plate was strange IMO.

The comments were rude.

I prefer strange to rude anyday. What a horrible woman.

prettybutterfly · 15/12/2008 12:27

Gorionine, it is quite different to pre-slicing a cake as OP put MORE packaging on!

poshwellies · 15/12/2008 12:27

odd thread.

baublerock · 15/12/2008 12:28

Crikey - what a bunch of bullies, I'd hate it if I was faced with people like that on the school run!

moopymoo · 15/12/2008 12:28

those mums sound pretty vile but you maybe need to laugh it off and say something like 'its how jamie says its done do you ladies know nothing' and hold your head high. I kind of get the plate thing, something to serve them on then cling film to hold together. their prob not yours unless you let it get to you - dont give your power away!

snowleopard · 15/12/2008 12:29

The cow! God I hate this stuff. Mums who use the fact that they are mums to revert into gangs of playground bitches. You just have to rise above, perfect a slightly condescending smile for when you have to walk past, and then ignore. Or laugh openly in their faces and say "Wow, are you really so upset and intimidated by a paper plate, amazing. Wait until you see my shepherd costume! Mwah-ha-ha-ha-haaaa!" etc. Give them something to get their teeth into.

You provided a plate, hmmmm you utter evil scheming witch, trying to "go one better"! P.M.S.L.

muggglewump · 15/12/2008 12:29

I do think the crisps on plate is a tad odd but I'd never have said anything, that's rude.

CarminaBanana · 15/12/2008 12:30

The other mothers were childish.
You were foolish to pick an argument with one of them in front of your child though.
I expect she'll have a lovely day at school now.

Gorionine · 15/12/2008 12:31

Well, It could also be used as the plate where the crisps are presented to the children or do they all get a packet each? In my experience, crisps are taken out of packaging and put on a plate on a table for the children to help themselves.

dingdongmerrilyonpie · 15/12/2008 12:31

They were rude but I don't think putting bags of crisps on paper plates and covering them with clingfilm is normal behaviour, sorry

Gorionine · 15/12/2008 12:32

crossposted again, damn.

rolandbrowning · 15/12/2008 12:32

How inadequate they must be to feel threatened by someone putting some bags of crisps on a paper plate. You've got to feel sorry for them.

FrostytheSurfmum · 15/12/2008 12:33

I don't think the plate is odd at all. If I'd seen it I would have thought how thoughtful it was. Maybe they would need a plate to put the crisps on when they were opened?

Tn0g · 15/12/2008 12:33

Crisps on a paper plate and cling film! Well, I mean....how ...very inappropriate.

Do you not know there are rules around these things?

Gateau · 15/12/2008 12:33

And we're supposed to be role models for our kids...
Sad cows - ignore and rise above.

beanieb · 15/12/2008 12:34

I think that's very rude and what dellightful children they must have if they were prepared to take the piss out of your kid like that. SAD!

Jenbot · 15/12/2008 12:35

Next year put them on a golden plate. That's what I'd do.

Gateau · 15/12/2008 12:35

I feel sorry for your DD too. She must have felt embarrassed, poor thing.
What horrible witches.

VinegarTitsTheSeasonToBeJolly · 15/12/2008 12:37

'You always go one better' what a childish thing to say

I reckon she is jealous of you
