To keep my child away from nursery so she will not catch Chicken Pox??

Ok, situation is following. Our group at the nursery is on quarantine coz on the 4th of December one child came to the nursery with chicken pox. From today all kids that have been in contact have been left home coz of above mentioned quarantine.
My dd wasn't at the nursery when it all happened. So we are allowed to go there as other 5 kids form the group of 25. Today two mums brought their kids to the nursery. They aew forbidden to go now there but they went to the head teacher and I don't know probably bribed her so she will let them go to the nursery during quarantene.
I am going to pick my dd from the nursery now and keep her home till quarantine is over coz if we stay now and get infected then she will have no Xmas party at the nursery and she really looking forward to that one.
FYI-Xmas party in Ukraine is more like New Year celebrations. At the end of December.

So AIBU keeping her home now?

not if you have very strong feelings about the Christmas party but generally I'm all in favour of catching chickenpox and getting it over with. The older you are, the worse it is.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 15/12/2008 10:27

It's your call but personally I think it's odd to quarantine the other children because they might have chicken pox.

I wouldn't keep my child home because she would be in contact with other children who only might have chicken pox though, not for something like the Christmas party.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 15/12/2008 10:28

The incubation period is up to 21 days from exposure for chicken pox IIRC

ukrainianmum · 15/12/2008 10:28

I don't mind about chicken pox, really I don't. But she is talking about this New Yearparty like 24/7. And she will be devasteted, I know. She learned a verse for Granddad Frost(russian version of Santa). She aggreed to be a squerell rather than a raindeer. And if she will catch it she will be home, while the rest will be at this party

i can't believe that the nursery can send all the children home because they have been in contact with someone who now has chicken pox.

DD1 was exposed to it at least 3 times before she got it. i was beginning to think she must be immune. Then when she did get it it was really really mild and hardly bothered her.

I think YABU but it is your choice after all. I personally would risk it.

ukrainianmum · 15/12/2008 10:34

well, it is by the law in Ukraine if you have been in contact with someone who has a chicken pox you are placed on quarantine. Our nursesries is a bit different to UK ones. Kids go there for full day. They eat there full course meals three times a day, napp there. There is no day groups like in UK.

So to escape kind of epidemy they always place the group on quarantine. And you are forbiden to bring your child to the nursery.
I am just pisse of that someone can go and bribe head teacher and I have to be keep mine dd at home so she will ahve a chance for a new year's party

epidemic?
it is just chicken pox.
better to get it when little, get it over and done with. far better than getting it when you are an adult or worse when pregnant.

islandofsodor · 15/12/2008 10:41

How odd.

I really don't understand this quarantine business. here we have chickenpox parties.

I did keep my dc away from dneice when they had chickenpox but only because we had a choice and dnceice was due to be a bridesmaid 2 weeks later.

Ds continued his normal round of activites when dd had chickenpox. Best to get it early as it can be quite nasty when older. Of course pg women need to be careful.

littleducks · 15/12/2008 10:43

could the children have previously had chicken pox and so be allowed to attend nursery, instead of having bribed the head teacher?

keep her home if you want, she may well catch it anyway
how old are the children? what hours do they do at nursery? (nosy, sounds very different to here)

belgo · 15/12/2008 10:45

You don't need to keep your children in quarentine if they've been exposed to chicken pox, but you should try and keep them away from newborn babies and pregnant women and anyone with immune problems, if possible.

belgo · 15/12/2008 10:45

You don't need to keep your children in quarentine if they've been exposed to chicken pox, because there's no guarentee they will develop it, but you should try and keep them away from newborn babies and pregnant women and anyone with immune problems, if possible.

ukranianmum - is this nursery in the UK or in the Ukraine?

belgo · 15/12/2008 10:47

how awful though if you suspect the head teacher has been bribed to overlook rules and regulations.

nickytinseltimes · 15/12/2008 10:49

Let me get this right -
1.children exposed to cp are quarantined (sp)
2.children go to nursery all day and are fed there.

Okay, I'm packing my bags and moving to the Ukraine!

ukrainianmum · 15/12/2008 11:11

yes, nursery is from 8 am till 17 pm. Well this is the hours that my dd spend there. But the groud is actually working from 7.30 till 19.30

Well, this is how they deal with checken pox in Ukraine. If someone has them and the rest who didn't have it but was in direct contact do not go to nursery-whatever private or state funded...

If anyone is interested, kids can start nursery from athe age of 11 months. My dd is 3, will be 4 in march

I wish DD would hurry up and get it but i do think Christmas would be bad timing.. i might try and avoid it at the moment.
