To expect commuters to park in a carpark rather than outside my house?

bought my house a couple of years ago. Like every other house in the street, everyone with a car has to park on the street. None of us has a garage or driveway. This didn't bother me much when we bought the house, as we only have one small car which we use at weekends, the rest of the time dh and I catch the train to work.

What does annoy me and sends my blood pressure spiralling is the fact that commuters take full advantage of the fact my street is a 10 minute walk to the train station, by parking up every morning. There is ample station car parking but it costs about £3 a day, hence why people park for free in my road. Every morning commuters in their cars arrive in droves to park for the day. What upsets me is the fact that DH and I made the choice to buy a house near town, so that we can walk to the train station. We could have bought a nicer, cheaper house outside of town and do what everyone else does, ie park in my road, but we didnt. I feel angry that the commuters who park in my street are benefitting from living somewhere nicer than me ie outside of town and yet benefit from my street.

Was on the train coming home last week and almost lost it. There were 2 blokes having a chat. First bloke says to his mate "do you want a lift home, I'm parked in the station carpark?". His friend says "no thanks, I've parked for free in xxxxxx road, it's very convenient". I end up confronting the bloke and getting myself in a sticky situation.

Everyone else including my dh tells me to just accept this is the way things are, but morally surely this is wrong!

YABU - they're as entitled to park there as you are.

If enough of your neighbours feel as aggrieved about it as you do you could petition the council to redesignate the street as residents' parking. But then you'd have to pay an annual charge.

NCforthis2019 · 25/07/2019 20:24

buy the road - then you have a say.
not buy the road - nothing much you can do.

Mintandcucumber · 25/07/2019 20:28

Sorry OP but YABU. You knew the score when you bought the house, and plus it doesn't sound like it actually inconveniences you since you don't use your car on weekdays anyway

NoddyAndBessie · 25/07/2019 20:28

The house has probably been demolished now its 11 years later...

At our old home, the residents got our road made residents only. It’s an expense and a hassle to always have a permit and makes having guests tricky sometimes, but it made a things much easier on the balance. It was absolutely worth it.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 25/07/2019 20:39

Our road near a zone 2 London tube station went from double-parked disaster to half empty as soon as residents' parking was introduced Grin

Jimdandy · 25/07/2019 21:27

My car is taxed, insured and MOTed.

Providing there are not restrictions I will park it on whatever public highway I wish.

If you choose to buy a house with no off road car parking, this is the risk you run. You didn’t buy the section of road outside your house.

I bet the OP has moved house at least twice since 2008.

SagAloojah · 25/07/2019 21:38

You can’t bring yourself to park legally on a residential street but you can bring yourself to ‘confront’ an innocent man on a train for parking lawfully.

You’ve got issues OP.

Why should I? I didn’t resurrect it.

You chose to live near a station, with unrestricted roads, what did you expect? We live on an unrestricted road near a station on a commuter line to London, the car park is tiny and £19 a day. We took that into account and wouldn't have bought a house on our street without a double driveway. Luckily most of the houses have drives and dropped curbs so there's not much room for commuters to park and our guests park across our drive boxing us in, so it's not an issue for us.

Dutch1e · 25/07/2019 22:03

@Shamrock35 how did you end up posting on an 11 year old thread?

AnnaDine · 25/07/2019 22:10

I don't have off street parking and my house is near a school, a park and a station. I accept its free parking for all (including me). I know I didn’t buy the rights to park outside my front door so honestly I think YABU.

coldwarenigma · 25/07/2019 22:38

We get this too..not too far from an airport, they park here and get taxis the rest of the way...we came home from holiday to find cars parked on both sides (cul de sac) nose to tail...they all had to wait while I unhitched my caravan, engaged the mover, manoeuvred the van onto our drive(dropped kerb), then reversed the car out the road to park elsewhere myself pissing off another householder no doubt
Problem has exacerbated since they demolished the 4 houses there when we moved in 20 years ago and built 17 in the plots.. Hmm

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 26/07/2019 00:07

I think this is what is boils down to - the buyer may not have thought through the consequences, but really that's no one else's fault! And when drivers are looking for a place to park (especially where parking spaces are scarce) of course they're going to park anywhere legal.

Durgasarrow · 26/07/2019 03:45

We have "residents only" parking between certain hours where we live, which makes it impractical for commuters to commandeer all the good local parking spaces. That would be something to fight for in your situation. Without that, you have no legal or moral right to complain to strangers if they park in any available parking spot anywhere.

LellyMcKelly · 26/07/2019 03:59

YABU. You don’t own the road, A busy road would be reflected in the price of the house. Are you telling me you always park in a car park rather than a road?

Pikapikachooo · 26/07/2019 06:07

That’s what we have residents permits !
It’s not immoral

AJPTaylor · 26/07/2019 06:42

We live a few mins from the train station. People park here. It doesn't bother us because we are a few mins from the station. Life is too short to get het up about this stuff

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 26/07/2019 07:11

I live near a University (where I also happen to work). Parking is very expensive on the campus so everyone just parks on my street and walks in. I don't really mind.

TheGoogleMum · 26/07/2019 07:43

Yabu if you have a home near a station or a hospital expect people to park outside. Near a school it'll happen around drop off and pick up times. If you want parking buy a house with a drive or something
