to object to television advertisements being broadcast at twice the volume the programme is

Is it me, or has anyone else noticed that when the programme breaks and the adverts come on, the volume goes through the roof.

You have to scramble around for the remote control to adjust it, and when the programme comes back on, then you have to turn the volume up again.

CBBC and Fiver are the absolute worst offenders but it seems to be on every single channel.

Is this is new ploy for advertisers to make you notice them. How cynical. It should bloody well be illegal to do this.

It is annoying, but my DH has the remote glued to his hand at all times, so the volume is turned down instantly or sometimes even in advance!!

thenewme · 13/12/2008 17:33

This was talked about a while ago and powers that be at tv said it was all at the same volume - it so is not.

BlueCowNowIsLowingAndDCAwake · 13/12/2008 17:34

twas ever thus, but in the olden days we used to have to run to the set before the really loud ones started! My dad was the world record holder from a sitting start to the volume control!

TsarHumbug · 13/12/2008 17:34

Yes, I've thought that for ages, although I'm sure I heard/read somewhere that they (advertisers) deny they do it

I agree it's horrible and makes me switch off at high speed.

dingdongmerrilyonpie · 13/12/2008 17:40

oh I didn't realise his has been on MN before. How can they possibly deny it? It's perfectly clear the volumes increased.

They claim that the volume is the same but that the tone (? - the graphic equaliser type fiddly bits) is adjusted so it seems louder but isn't. Oh no.

littleducks · 13/12/2008 17:58

I think there was something on the advertising standards website about ut

AnarchyInAManger · 13/12/2008 17:59

ASA on this

JollyPirate · 13/12/2008 18:02

I mute it as soon as the ads come on.

Mamazontopofsanta · 13/12/2008 18:03

i had a trhead about this ages ago too. i thought i was imagining it at first.

nowtygaffer · 13/12/2008 18:06

Drives me mad too. My DD wears hearing aids so we always have the volume on quite high anyway. Also our volume button is broken on the remote control so can't mute anymore!

whoingodsnameami · 13/12/2008 18:08

Yes, this drives me insane, especially when dts are just getting off to sleep and I am not near the remote to turn it down quick enough.

deste · 14/12/2008 14:01

The adverts are definately louder, I too adjust the volume at adverts.

UnquietDad · 14/12/2008 14:03

CBBC doesn't have ads, but I assume you mean the programme trails.

They always claim it's not louder volume but something to do with "sound compression." I don't care how it's done, though - ADS ARE LOUDER!!

dilbertina · 14/12/2008 14:07

My FIL has a real bee in his bonnet about this, it isn't supposed to happen any more....if you complain they'll go and check it doesn't break any rules...he asked how many complaints they had actually had since they introduced the new rules and the answer was very few (less than 100). So if this annoys you get complaining (you need to report a specific instance - channel & time, not just generic "it always gets louder"!).

I'll check with him who you complain too....
