to think that everything a girl owns doesn't HAVE to be pink?

Obviously it's different if you/your child like pink. I am not that keen and would prefer everything in my house not to be pink. DD is still young enough for me to decide I'm sure once she hits the princess stage I'll be screwed.

The issue is my mum wants to buy DD this for Christmas. I have very politely said that I would really prefer this version of it. Same price, same bloody toy, just in nice vibrant colours, which imo babies/v young toddlers prefer anyway. My mum has said she doesn't think she could possibly buy that, as it's a toy for boys. Obviously I would accept the pink one graciously as it's not that big a deal, but AIBU to think that just because DD is a girl doesn't mean that she can only have toys in one colour, as opposed to a variety of colours including blue!

yanbu

MenaMilou · 12/12/2008 20:44

YANBU. The first one makes me feel a bit nauseous, the second one is a unisex toy

Lizzylou · 12/12/2008 20:44

YANBU prefer the bright one anyway.

BouncingTinsel · 12/12/2008 20:44

No I've noticed a few toys like that - a bright coloured version which IMO are completely gender neutral and a pink version obviously aimed at little girls.
I might just by ds some pink things...

Seabright · 12/12/2008 20:45

YANBU - I hate pink, my DP hates pink & everything for children is either pale blue (often equally vile) or pale pink.

Knowing our luck DD will grow up loving all things pink & sparkly.............

MirandaG · 12/12/2008 20:45

yanbu, but at least it's a tasteful wooden toy. You should see the plastic monstrosities in my house!
Can you not say thayt you might have a boy next and you'd like to be able to use it for 'him' too. Credit crunch, save the planet etc?!

TeenyTinyTorya · 12/12/2008 20:45

YANBU. The pink one is horrible, the colourful one is really nice and unisex.

I do not intend to have anything in that sickly shade of Barbie pink if I can help it

WorzselMincepieYummage · 12/12/2008 20:46

Yanbu but your DD will probably disagree when she gets to 2 or 3.

I hate pink but we're saturated with it.

peachsmuggler · 12/12/2008 20:46

YANBU - I think the one you have suggested is lovely. All this bloody pink business does my head in too. If you had another child and it was a boy, would your mum be ok with him playing with the pink one?? Probably not, if she thinks your DD can't have that one!!

SparklyGothKat · 12/12/2008 20:46

I prefer the unisex one

christmasiana · 12/12/2008 20:46

i share your issues with pink! trying to find a nice first bike for DD that doesn't involved either pink tassles or firemen connotations. i cannot believe how sexist toys are and i am tempted to fire off an angry letter to argos and raleigh!

misdee · 12/12/2008 20:48

YANBU. i have 4 dd's. where possible i avoid pink things. unless deep pink and not powder-pink [yuk]

CharCharGaboriaInExcelsisDeo · 12/12/2008 20:49

Thanks Was a bit worried I'd get a flurry of YABUs, so phew! Agree MirandaG, I do prefer wooden toys. That's a good plan too, I might say what if I have a boy next and see what she says. I know DD will be in the pink stage soon enough so I'd like to get my choices in before she cares I am grateful that my mum wants to buy her something, just would like it to be a bit less pink!

The pink issue makes me feel a bit annoyed. It's like somebody decided, in retail head office, to make life easier for themselves and every girl should be in pink and boy in blue.

It's utterly ridiculous. I like pink but I like a whole host of other colours too. I don't like walking into a shop and finding the girls' department entirely pink (take note LIttlewoods). Nor do I appreciate when my daughter wears blue, people assuming she is a boy. Women have had enough restrictions placed upon them without others deciding what colour they are allowed to wear.

Sorry. Heavy but I've had four glasses of wine.

OP, you are YANBU. Go for the normal, beautifully multi coloured one and don't let anyone restrict your daughter's choices in colour.

Rant over!

CharCharGaboriaInExcelsisDeo · 12/12/2008 20:52

Oh yes I do like a nice hot or deep pink. Pale pink is just so meh to me.

YANBU. I hate pink with a vengeance too. When walking into baby clothing stores the sheer waves of marshmallow pink used to bring on severe bouts of nausea. When I knew I was expecting a girl I told everybody in no uncertain terms that any pink items given to me would be chucked in the bin/go straight to a charity shop.

I really don't understand this pink mania, it's such an imaginative colour and most small children prefer bright colours anyway.

misdee · 12/12/2008 20:54

dd4 has a lovely knitted blue cardy. its warm its a gorgeous shade of blue and she looks lovely in it. but when she wears it people say 'oh did u want a boy then'

Brangelina · 12/12/2008 20:54

unimaginative.

Hot pink or fuschia is fine, it's that sickly shade of pastel that makes me ill.

CharCharGaboriaInExcelsisDeo · 12/12/2008 20:54

WW I totally agree. I had a massive rant at my dad the other day, asking what was wrong with girls being mechanics or builders, and what was wrong with boys cooking, cleaning and looking after babies. Poor guy hadn't even said anything to the contrary

duckyfuzz · 12/12/2008 20:55

YANBU I feel just the same

but my twin girls are now 5 and despite my best efforts, everything has to be pink

misdee · 12/12/2008 20:56

dd4 in pink and blue lol

CharCharGaboriaInExcelsisDeo · 12/12/2008 20:58

That's annoying misdee. DD had a lovely soft blue coat when she was smaller and everyone thought she was a boy in it. I even buy her boys' trousers as girls' trousers are usually too tight around the thigh for climbing and rolling around. My mother is quite obsessed with pink Brangelina, I think everything she's ever bought DD has been pink. I supplement with nice bright colours to make up for it.

That a boy you've got there, misdee? She's scrummy, isn't she?

OP posts:
snickersnack · 12/12/2008 20:59

dd is obsessed by pink. But she has never had pink toys - scooter, doll buggy etc - because I was so tight forward thinking I wanted to make sure anything we bought we would be suitable for future children. I've capitulated this Christmas. Her bike is horribly pink. She's going to love it.

misdee · 12/12/2008 21:00

boys jeans suit dd1 better.

i do have a lot of pink stuff for dd4, mainly stuff thats been passed down from her sisters or cousins.

but i much prefer purple.
