to get annoyed with the blardy triage nurse this afternoon when she told me to 'try an acupuncture band' for my sickness

I have had D&V for 4 farking days; am 12 weeks pregnant, have a roaring temperature and can't even keep paracetamol down and there is NO sign of any improvement.

NO - I don't need a effing acupuncture band; I need to see a effing doctor.

'Well, if you really think you're an emergency...'

I know that she was only doing her job; and that gp surgeries are very busy at this tie of year, but words failed me. After throwing my toys out of pram got to see dr - who was absolutely lovely (though v concerned and if no better tomorrow going to hosp for rehydration )

What is an acupuncture band? You are preggers so you should be given priority after 4 days.

duckyfuzz · 11/12/2008 20:24

actually she might be being quite helpful, my nanny is pg and has dreadful sickness, acupuncture is the only thing to help her

Apparently it can help with nausea. I guess she was trying to be helpful - it was her reluctance to let me see a dr that really made me cross.

Am feeling better about it just from the above rant - got it off my chest!!

Acupressure bands (like seabands) are really very useful in some people, I've used them and will suggest them to patients as there is an evidence base for them. That doesn't change the fact that if you are pregnant and have had 4 days of D+V you need proper medical advice. Glad you got it and hope you feel better soon.

UnfortunatelyMe · 11/12/2008 20:27

Have you tried the band? She was trying to help.

brunettemum · 11/12/2008 20:28

But would it work for a D&V bug? I'm so violently ill at the moment, that I can't imagine it would help - that's the sceptic in me I guess

Well worth a try maybe for morning sickness (althought they didn't work for me) but is that what you actually have Brunettemum?

D&V sounds more like a tummy bug and what with being pregnant and having it for 4 days I'd be hopping mad at that too. You certainly had every reason to expect to see a doctor.

Hope you feel better soon btw.

nickytinseltimes · 11/12/2008 20:30

I used one for morning sickness adn it made no odds.
Quite what it would do for a D&V bug I don't know.

You should have been checked for dehydration, etc I think. You wouldn't need to see a doctor specifically, but a nurse should have checked you over.

HaveYourselfAJammyLittleXmas · 11/12/2008 20:32

I can see that an acupressure band could help with nausea, if caused by pg, or motion sickness, or something that is making you feel rather bleugh. But if from a bad case of D&V, I doubt it would stop the V, let alone the D! But hey, I could be wrong.

Don't blame you for being narked though! You certainly did need to see a doctor-glad you got there in the end.

brunettemum · 11/12/2008 20:33

No, I haven't tried it. I can barely walk, have a fever, constant D&V. Thought a dr's appt was needed tbh. Had I felt less ill, I might have given the idea more thought.

Feeling that bad, you should really have been given better care.
It will be fine, but the reassurance is necessary.
I had a similar thing when pg and was admitted for a few hours to the ward for obs. Felt so much better just for being taken seriously. They checked my hydration and that my bloods were okay.

Just decent care realy.

ummadam · 11/12/2008 20:50

it might relieve the nausea a bit but it won't make any difference to the D+V

tiredsville · 11/12/2008 20:53

Dehydration is know joke. Four days is quite long for constant D&V. Sorry, I've just realised what an acupunctue band is.

mumbear · 11/12/2008 21:19

They just gave me bruses on my wrists lol, they were painful and didnt help my nausea one bit!! Hope you feel better soon

thisisyesterday · 11/12/2008 21:25

hmm yes, god forbid someone suggest something that might help eh?

what a terrible nurse

bekkaboo · 11/12/2008 21:33

Gave me bruises too but stopped me throwing up all afternoon and evening, well worth trying for couple of quid.I was sceptical but after 2 hours could see massive difference. Hope you feel better soon x

ithinkimtallandblonde · 11/12/2008 21:54

YABU D&V is neither an accident or an emergency imo. If you explain your circumstance to gps receptionist they will get a dr to speak to you and squeeze you in for an emergency apt if necessary. Sipping dioralyte slowly is enough to rehydrate you. The hospitals can't cope at this ime of year.

cheshirekitty · 11/12/2008 22:14

Was triage nurse A & E? If so YABU. You should have gone to your GP.

If she was GP triage, then YANBU to expect to see a GP.

noonki · 11/12/2008 22:22

YABU - those bands were amazing, if I took them off for a moment I would feel sick again.

What else could she do really other than offer you rehydration salts at that point?

hazeyjane · 11/12/2008 22:31

Acupuncture bands can be very successful at relieving nausea and vomiting, which is why they are often given to you when you have chemotherapy.

Is Dioralyte ok during pregnancy, dh, dd's and I had horrendous d&v about 3 weeks after having dd2, and it was fantastic stuff.

Hope you feel better soon.

tiredsville · 11/12/2008 22:31

I had food poisioning years ago, I was so dehydrated that I had to have fluid intravenously. The doctor considered it an emergency, afterall a sip of water and I was almost thrown to the otherside of the room from the heaving.
