I think I am a soft touch.

(loud) knock at door (sleeping baby upstairs) so I rush to answer it to find a young lad on the doorstep. He tells me that he is an ex offender and selling stuff.

I am keen to help so ask prices. Its extortionate!! Anyway I bought a pack of household wipes 40 for £4.99 .... !!! Thats expensive per wipe, they better be good

Am all for helping people but why cant the prices be a bit more realistic, or AIBU to complain ..... ??? Its the festive season etc etc.

He was very nice to me (well at £4.99!!) but I cant help but feel conned.

I buy some toiletries from an organisation that provides work for blind people. They are very pricey TBH and not all that great. But it's only 2 or 3 times a year and it helps.

OrmIrian · 12/12/2008 15:26

Generally I'd rather be conned a few times than be a cynical bastard iyswim.

pamelat · 12/12/2008 15:34

Yep I just think that more people would be happier to buy them if they were reasonable (not cheap or competing with the super markets etc but just not ridiculous).

I would rather give someone a £ rather than spend £5 on something that I don't want.

I used to have one of these guys come round every 3 months or so - the one I had used to make me smile cos he would rattle off his whole spiel without drawing breath! By the end of it he could barely speak and I always bought a 10 pk of sponge washers or something like that, until I didn't really need stuff any more so I had to say no.

pamelat · 12/12/2008 15:43

I think it shows the state of my day when its actually quite nice to have someone to interact with on the doorstep.

I find that once DD is asleep, I am stuck indoors and its quite lonely. What did people do before the internet?

I blame you lot.

I have lived here for a year and a half and never had any kind of door to door stuff since I moved here.

The doorbell rung tonight and I thought it was my mindee's parents.

Turns out it was a man from some childrens' charity selling air freshners.

He must be a MNetter

I have just had one if these poor young lads at the door.
Although I feel desperately sorry for him; walking around in the rain, without a waterproof, carrying a heavy bag and facing so much rejection I still refuse to be ripped off.
Why can't the organisers understand that these schemes would be a much bigger success if the products more reasonably priced?
I would rather have given him a couple of quid for nothing than be ripped off but the only money I had in the house was a £20 note.
I now feel really guilty! Sad poor lad.

What would you have done?

aldiwhore · 20/09/2011 11:39

I've done the same, and seemed to become a soft touch target, I now say I haven't any moeny, but good luck! I don't like anyone coming to my door in general....

Pakdooik · 20/09/2011 11:42

I occasionally buy from this scheme and simply see it as making a donation. the stuff is way over priced as the sellers themselves recognise when I've spoken to them

freybean · 20/09/2011 11:44

you do know this is from 2008

membershipcard · 20/09/2011 12:48

I knew it was from 2008 but still relevant.
He knocked on my door this morning. Pity that things haven't changed in 3 years.
