To be offended?

Went swimming today, as I did the walk of shame from the changing rooms to the pool a woman in the pool looked me up and down and said to her friend - if my legs looked like that I wouldn't go swimming.

My upper legs have quite long big scars on from self harm, and the scars are quite red (only 6 months old).

I was pretty offended but my DH says that it was not offensive, just, badly phrased meaning I was brave to go swimming.

She didn't aim the comment at me, but didn't say it quietly anyway but the pool is v.echoey.

I refrained from commenting on her saggy tits and big arse.

YANBU, some people are just so ignorant.

christmosschops30 · 11/12/2008 17:25

Smurfgirl you did very well to not comment on her saggy tits and big arse, maybe you should if you see her again.

Or say 'my scars will heal but you'll always be a fucking ugly bitch, hey -ho'

take no notice of people so bitter and full of self hatred that they take it out on someone else

smurfgirl · 11/12/2008 17:31

I am not upset especially. People like to take be rude when you have scars.
Just feel a bit FFS why do people have to be so rude? I know they look shit, I am not blind and I was there when I did them ;) so it all feels a bit uncessary to comment and be rude. Not stopping me from swimming though. Am braving it with a friend who has not seen my legs before tomorrow, have pre-warned her though!!

OMG, YANBU

What a horrible person.

Do you think she didn't think that you would hear her? (not that that makes it ok)

thederkinsdame · 11/12/2008 20:37

YANBU How rude of her. But please don't let an ignorant cow like that put you off swimming. It does make me see red though. I can't believe the number of people who will openly comment on other people's physical appearance. I swim with my toddler and recently two teenager girls (in the toddler pool!) were commenting on how fat I was. I turned to my son and said loudly, 'Oh look, darling! Those poor girls are in the pool with the babies. I bet they can't swim. I wonder if they still wear nappies, too?' They left straight away and didn't bother us again.

Daisy15 · 12/12/2008 18:56

What goes around comes around. Someone will probably make a horrible comment on her that she won't like!

nooka · 12/12/2008 19:16

Lol thederkinsdame that's the kind of thing I only think long after the unpleasant incident. Malicious without being rude too.

I think people are in general just very thoughtless. Sometimes (as with the teenagers) they are showing off, but mostly I think it is a disconnect between the brain and the mouth. Who looks good at the swimming pool anyway?

ChiefElf · 12/12/2008 19:25

Oh smurf, what a bitch she was

DH no longer goes swimming because of the hurtful comments he overheard about his burn scars. The bastard who put him off had a knock on effect on the kids since they miss out on swimming sessions with their dad

Email/Facebook me when you get a minute. Trying to arrange drinks (probably after Christmas) for the locals

ChiefElf · 12/12/2008 19:25

Oops sorry, 'tis me, StG btw

bonnycat · 12/12/2008 19:54

What a nasty cow, good for you for going swimming, take no notice of her.

matildax · 12/12/2008 20:15

smurfgirl, that is awful, and very very thoughtless of her. im very for you.

i know all to well how hurtful comments like that can be.
i am very over weight but go swimming with my little ones as they love it. and i enjoy the laughter and the fun we all share. people stare all the time, and its very hurtful, and i do get very sad about it. but i want to enjoy times with my dcs so i grin and bear it.

the worst offenders i find, are the other woman in the changing rooms. they are probably thinking 'jesus i am glad i don't look like her' which maybe is fair enough, but it does make me cry sometimes, however i refuse to stop going.
plus its good for me and the kids.
so please hold your head up high, and carry on going.
