"pay back 32 grand" instead of "pay back 32 thousand pounds".

I think I probably am being unreasonable in the changing face of the english language roll with the times and all that but by god it irritated me.

No you are not.

DoubleBluff · 10/12/2008 17:32

I get really irritated by that sort of thing on the news. They really should speak properly, like what i do

DBXmum · 10/12/2008 17:33

Dumbing down even on the news. It's lazy and unacceptable.

Tigurr · 11/12/2008 05:37

You'd love the news over here (Australia) then

Instead of robbers/burglars we have "bandits".

Instead of saying "xxx was attacked by robbers", they say "xxx was bashed by bandits".

And they have managed to turn the word Farewell into a verb - at the end of this month "we will be farewelling 2008" or when someone dies, the report says "xxx was farewelled by family and friends".

Bless 'em, I think they're just trying to create their own language LOL

YANBU, they should uphold some sort of standards. At the dss' Christmas Concert this week one class did a Nativity drama, which the class teacher narrated, and she kept saying "Aks" instead of "Ask", .

Raalix · 11/12/2008 07:12

Aks - sounds like a Catherine Tate superfan!

mumto3boys · 11/12/2008 12:23

YANBU

The newsreader on our local radio constantly says 'gonna'

It's driving me insane, surely newsreaders are meant to speak properly?

thenewme · 11/12/2008 12:25

I can't stand it when the news is all chatty.

tiredsville · 11/12/2008 12:31

YANBU, seems the only criteria for reading the news is having a margin of sex appeal to the general public.

Kitteh · 11/12/2008 12:33

YANBU. I always thought newsreaders were meant to speak queens english.

chocolatedot · 11/12/2008 12:36

Tigurr, I have also heard "bingle" for car crash spoken by an announcer in Australia!

WewishyouaBUMPERLICIOUS · 11/12/2008 12:46

Urgh, was it ITV? I hate ITV news, they have to create a CGI graphic of everything, especially court cases

Libra1975 · 11/12/2008 12:46

Hearing "bashed by bandits" would make me laugh. (not that being beaten up is funny of course).

Tigurr · 13/12/2008 01:27

Ooh, I've not heard "bingle" yet... love it!

Libra1975 -yup, I struggle to keep a straight face watching the news here sometimes. The best ones are when the politicians have had an argument in parliament and called each other names like prick & twat... it's fantastic

I studied that for GCSE's

hippipotami · 13/12/2008 10:44

Argh, it would bug me too!
At ds's school play (which was fantastic) one line in the final song went like this:

"we've got no more to show ya".

I cringed and squirmed in my seat...Awful awful awful use of language. And completely at odds with the rest of the play which was brilliant and enjoyable and just great.

Shudder.

I also hate grand instead of thousands. I sometimes watch homes under the hammer (crappy morning property show) and both presenters use grand instead of thousand. I used to want to throw things at the screen.
(instead I just stopped watching it
