Christmas Cards at school

My seven year old has just been informed that she is only allowed to send a maximum of four Christmas cards via the post box at school. This is for environmental reasons - however she is seriously worried about which friends to choose! I have said that she can give other friends cards in the playground but she is worried about being "caught" by the teachers.
She makes her own Christmas cards, so as well as showing her friends that she cares she is also building on her cutting, gluing and manual deceterity skills not to mention writing.
I am being unreasonable to feel that the school is taking the environmental issue too far and what are other Primary Schools doing?

No, yanbu.

Make a point of handing them out at the gates, so someone can see you.

Schools bug me.

xx

I think that is ridiculous. WTF has it got to do with the school. Def hand them out at the school gates. You don't tell the teachers who to send cards to, what makes them think they can dictate to children. How lovely that she makes her own cards. She sounds a very caring thoughtful little girl. Tell the school to get stuffed. Miserable buggers!

YANBU I would give in the playground and if the school say something explain that it's alot of pressure for your child who to choose and how bad would it be if one child got 7 cards and another none.

MrsSeanBean · 09/12/2008 14:12

Duh! Yet another well thought out school rule!

YA deffo NBU.

I don't know why schools are so mean and lacking in Christmas spirit. DCs love the whole thing.

piscesmoon · 09/12/2008 14:18

I would hand them out in the playground.

Most schools here do a post box (including the one I work in) - delivered by a couple of P7's with some P1's in tow. As far as I know they have no limits and it is used as a social interaction scheme (gives P1's a chance to meet some other children in the school)

Give the bunch of scrooges a box of bah-humbugs!! No doubt they'll be wanting old cards after Christmas for craft activities!

AnnaJF · 09/12/2008 14:33

Thanks - it's great to hear that you all feel as I do - i must admit i don't think the head has thought of the implications poor child(ren) who don't receive any cards -no doubt she will be bringing in a specialist counsellor to deal with the "social rejection" later!

I am all for environment friendly, but this is pushing it a bit. Our school has a Christmas card "recycle scheme" that will start after the Christmas holiday. I think it is a better idea.

(I do not know how it will be done yet as it will be the first time they will do it)

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 09/12/2008 14:45

Ours says no cards at all. Instead they are allowed to pay £1 to write a message to friends on a star which gets put up in the school hall.
Its a bit rubbish really. Christmas cards at school are part of the fun and the build up. dd has daringly taken cards in anyway.

gagamama · 09/12/2008 15:15

Get her to make cards out of a ceral box (no decorating them - just a plain ceral box).

gagamama · 09/12/2008 15:16

Or even a CEREAL box.

Sunshine78 · 09/12/2008 15:38

I cant believe this I used the excuse of writting cards to all the class as a way to get my ds to practice his writting in a fun way. Any way if other children are like mine the cards will be cut up and made into all sorts before they get put in the recycling bin - world has gone mad.

happystory · 09/12/2008 15:45

I can (sort of) see where they are coming from if the reason is distribution of said cards. I work in a preschool. Just one small preschool. 40 kids on register. Ok they don't all send to all but many do, and if they did -40x40 is blimmin' LOADS to pass on...takes up half the morning as it is.

But obviously no problem if parents hand them out.....

RustyBear · 09/12/2008 16:01

I'd agree with those who say hand them out in the playground - but I think happystory may be right to say it may be to limit the amount of work involved in sorting them.

And as one who often has that happy task, can I just say to those whose schools are not being Scrooge-like about cards - please can you get your DC to write the full name & class of everyone they send cards to on the envelope - not just 'Jack' or 'Emma' - we sometimes have to sort through the pile to find all the cards in the same handwriting so we can work out which class they are in & who they are sending to.
