Was searching last night for some help as LO has a terrible cold and can't stop thinking about the posts about mums actually sucking the snot from their lo's noses. I'm sure this must be dangerous or AIBU.

And no I am not a troll.

I've done it, with my mouth, it was that or waking up 50 times a night. I know which I'd pick...

mrs snape im with you

EffieGadsby · 29/04/2009 18:25

My cousin tried to persuade me I could do this when I was looking after her little baby boy; she was doing it herself, but it was her baby, which makes it a very different matter. The idea of it even now makes me retch. Maybe I'll feel differently when my own pops out, but I sincerely doubt it.

jambutty · 29/04/2009 18:25

I did it when dd1 was very tiny then called Dh at work in a panic worried I might have sucked her brains out.

missmelly · 29/04/2009 18:42

I've done this when DD has had big boogers in her nose and couldnt breathe/feed very well. I just put in a saline drop to soften (and sometimes she'd sneeze and the bogey would fly out and I could grab it) and then give a gentle suck at her nose just to bring it forward so I could get it out with my little finger nail. I've never ended up with a mouthful of snot.

Effie - I agree with you - this is not something I would have done for any other baby except my own !

Leni75 · 29/04/2009 19:37

Jeeze, you gave birth to it, sucking a bit of snot out of its nose into your mouth is nothing.........

LoveBeingAMummy · 30/04/2009 20:34

Blimey someone had t think for a long time about what they were going to post!!!!

laweaselmys - thanks one of the very few people that actually got my point

lou222 · 30/04/2009 21:58

not sucked yet ! but pre baby when i saw mums picking their little ones nose i was disgusted.
When pregnant i actually swore i would never do it. Now it's one of my fave things to do - so satisfying.

fandango75 · 01/05/2009 16:55

oh my lordy lord

its not dangerous just gross

Not wanting to suck your childs snot does not make you a bad mum either....

FairLadyOfMuslinCloth · 01/05/2009 17:13

I used one of those little sucker thingies for this....wouldn't do it by mouth...

It is great when Baby is severely blocked up for immeidate relief...

alicecrail · 01/05/2009 17:15

The sucker things are GENIUS!

BannedInternationalFlight · 01/05/2009 18:02

Seriously, try it on yourself before you inflict it on a helpless child!

It's really horrid.

FairLadyOfMuslinCloth · 01/05/2009 18:21

hmm..I have tried it on myself...and didn't think it was horrid...a bit of a weird sensation, but that was all....

BannedInternationalFlight · 01/05/2009 19:11

Oh Ok

It freaked my nose out completely!!

Greensleeves · 01/05/2009 19:13

oh god I am so fucking sick of seeing this disgusting thread title

feralgirl · 01/05/2009 19:34

The sucker thingy saved our sanity when DS had a cold. He couldn't feed without me hauling the snot out of him. But he'd have to be really ill before I'd be tempted to do the Angela's Ashes technique of using my own mouth though.

Rubyslippers you're not alone. Snot-sucking has a similar satisfaction status as squeezing spots IMO

Weird isn't it, how anyone else's pooh, snot, puke etc. is revolting but I couldn't give a monkey's about being covered with DS's bodily fluids.
